It&#8217;s usually passed over in favor of other, better-known amino acids like homocysteine or tryptophan. But taurine has an important job to do when it comes to the proper functioning of your body. High concentrations of this amino acid are found in your heart muscle, skeletal muscle, nervous system and white blood cells. </p>
<p> Researchers at the Institute for World Health Development in Nishinomiya, Japan, investigated taurine for a possible beneficial role in the prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease. For their study, which was coordinated by the World Health Organization, the research team reviewed surveys pertaining to diet in 61 different Japanese populations. In particular, they collected data related to cardiovascular disease risk and mortality.</p>
<p> They found that participants <div class="toggle">with higher taurine levels had significantly lower body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and total cholesterol when compared with those having the lowest taurine levels. Cardiovascular risks were intensified in individuals whose taurine and magnesium levels were lowest. The researchers noted that taurine may beneficially affect those who experience salt- sensitive blood pressure rise.</p>
<p> The research team concluded that the preventative effects of taurine make it good for health and longevity. They also cite the example of Australian Aboriginals who live near the coastal areas in Victoria. These peoples traditionally ate taurine- and magnesium-rich foods and were free from the ravages of cardiovascular disease 200 years ago. Presently, though, this population has nearly the highest cardiovascular risks because of dietary changes. 200 years ago they were eating seafood, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and milk &#8212; a diet similar to that of prehistoric hunters&#8217; and gatherers&#8217; and high in taurine.</p>
<p> To boost your nutritional health, add these taurine-rich foods to your diet: eggs; fish; meat; and milk.</p>

It&#8217;s the result of nerve damage by compromised small blood vessels surrounding the nerve. It occurs most frequently in diabetic patients with prolonged high blood sugar levels. </p>
<p> Patients with diabetic neuropathy may experience these symptoms: stabbing pains; burning sensation, especially in the evening; muscle twitching; impaired speech; difficulty swallowing; muscle weakness; dizziness; blurred vision; drooping eyelid; chronic diarrhea; reduced sensation anywhere in the body; and, most commonly, numbness and tingling sensation in the extremities. </p>
<p> In general,  <div class="toggle">diabetic neuropathy is divided into three categories: sensorimotor; autonomic; and cranial. Sensorimotor neuropathy involves primarily the long nerves, especially in the foot and lower legs, with numbness or a tingling sensation. Autonomic nerves control the functions of the heart, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary system. When affected by diabetes, heart rate, breathing patterns, and gastrointestinal and urinary functions may change. <br /> <strong><br /> Here is some evidence as to how Lipoic acid could help treat diabetic neuropathy:</strong></p>
<p> 1995: A study with 328 patients used 100, 600, or 1,200 milligrams (mg) of Lipoic acid. The first dose lowered symptoms by 38%, the second by 64% and the third by 60%. Note: Lipoic acid was administered by IV. </p>
<p> 1997: A study tested 800 mg of Lipoic acid over four months. It found that the treatment improved neuropathy. </p>
<p> 1997: Another study tested the same as above and concluded that Lipoic acid slightly improved neuropathy.</p>
<p> 1999: Both 600 mg and 1,200 mg used over four months improved the flow of nerves. </p>
<p> 1999: Over three weeks, patients took 1,800 mg of Lipoic acid. The supplement was safe and lowered symptoms by 47%.</p>
<p> 2003: 600 mg of Lipoic acid through an IV improved pain and other neuropathic symptoms. </p>
<p> 2006: A study found that 600, 1,200 and 1,800 mg over five weeks improved stabbing and burning pain. The smaller dose had the best risk-to-benefit ratio.</p>
<p> Overall, three conclusions have been drawn from the past studies. One: short-term treatment for three weeks with 600 mg intravenously reduced many of the neuropathic symptoms. Two: taking lipoic acid orally for four to seven months reduced both peripheral and cardiac neuropathic symptoms. Three: Lipoic acid appears to be quite safe.</p>
<p> Lipoic acid supplements are considered safe in doses of up to 1,800 mg a day for six months. The most commonly reported side effects after oral use include allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, hives and itching, and gastrointestinal complaints, such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.</p>

In keeping with its strong reliance on food, Chinese medicine uses many fasts to enhance health, lift moods, cleanse the body, build strength, eliminate acid and mucus, and take the burden off of certain organs. Here are the first two of five fasts we&#8217;ll present, used in Asia for specific purposes. </p>
<p> It may take a visit to a Chinese medicine practitioner to fully understand your particular symptoms. Everyone would do well to get themselves checked out according to this style of medicine. </p>
<p> 1. Raw Produce &amp; Liquids<br /> Nobody with symptoms of coldness or deficiency should attempt this diet. Symptoms of these include chills, white complexion, thin/watery mucus, hardened joints, difficulty bending and moving, weakness, shallow breathing, and overall frailty.<div class="toggle"> This is a good transition diet for people who want to focus more on whole plant foods rather than animal products, and for those with symptoms of excess.</p>
<p> For food, only raw vegetables and fruit can be eaten, with a salad obviously being the main component. When thirsty, drink water, juice, or herbal tea.</p>
<p> A cleansing all-juice diet is made up of fruit, vegetable, and/or barley or wheat grass drinks. Carrots, celery, cabbage, salad greens, and beets make excellent juices. Many fruits are good as well, with apple being the all- purpose choice. </p>
<p> Some use all-tea diets, if you can believe it. Those with psoriasis or arthritis or obesity might dry a tea made with two parts burdock, and one part red clover blossoms. Try one part fennel seed, one part flaxseed, one part fenugreek seed, and half part licorice root for liver disorders, digestive problems, and weak lungs.</p>
<p> Some diet with just water, sometimes infused with lemon. Ideally you should aim, for any liquid fast, for six to eight glasses a day.</p>
<p> 2. The Algae Fast<br /> Though it doesn&#8217;t sound thrilling, a fast that focuses on ingesting microalgae can be incomparably healthy. Sea vegetables, which is what algae are, are amongst the healthiest foods in the world, as they are dense with minerals and vitamins. This fast is best for diabetics, anyone with sugar cravings (and thus possibly overweight), and anyone who finds fasting hard. Anyone who is weak or thin should combine microalgae with the next two fasts in this article. The great thing about this fast is that it kills hunger.</p>
<p> Mix algae into juice, herbal tea, or water three times a day. What are microalgae? Spirulina is a big one; aim for five grams in each sitting. Chlorella is another, more powerful option, so aim at about 1.5 g. Another is wild blue-green algae, stronger still, at about 3/4 gram. If you have any questions, consult the person working at the herbal store or check with a nutrionist.</p>

<p>Sour reflux, heartburn attacks, stomach ulcers and digestive problems indicate that Nat. Phos is badly deficient. For frequent cases of indigestion, keep a bottle of this tissue salt on hand. <p><strong>Nuts:</strong> The least acidic nuts are almonds. Nuts high in acid are peanuts and walnuts.</p>

<p><strong>Sweeteners:</strong> Stevia is alkaline, while processed honey and refined sugar are very high acid foods. The worst sweeteners to ingest because of their extremely high acidity are the artificial sweeteners commonly used as sugar substitutes.</p>
<p><strong>Fruits:</strong> Lemons, watermelons, papaya, mangoes and grapefruits are alkaline in the body and help counter excess acidity. Blueberries, cranberries and prunes, although healthy, are highly acidic fruits.</p>
<p><strong>Dairy:</strong> Dairy produce, including raw milk and cheeses are acidic. The more alkaline milk and cheese comes from goats.</p>
<p>Meat, chicken and fish are acidic foods.</p>
<p>Soft drinks, tea and coffee are acidic &#8211; lemon water and herbal teas are alkaline.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Chinese Herbal Medicines For Preventing Diabetes In High Risk People</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">More research is required to establish whether Chinese herbal medicines can reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes, according to Cochrane Researchers. Although herbal medicines are widely used in Asian countries to treat pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance or IGT), the precursor of the disease, researchers say there is still not enough hard scientific evidence to confidently recommend their use.</p>
<p>&#8220;People with impaired glucose tolerance are more likely to develop full blown diabetes and it may be possible to prevent or delay the onset of the disease through lifestyle changes and medication. Chinese herbal medicines have been used for this purpose for a long time, so there is plenty of anecdotal evidence for their safety and effectiveness, but we were interested to find out whether scientific research could provide a basis for recommending these alternative treatments,&#8221; says lead researcher, Suzanne Grant of the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research at the University of Western Sydney in Australia.</p>
<p>Pre-diabetes is recognised by higher than normal blood sugar levels. People with pre-diabetes are advised to change their diets to control their blood glucose levels and prevent progress to diabetes. In China, Korea and Japan herbal pills, teas and powders have been used for a long time to treat pre-diabetes and diabetes. They are thought to work in a number of different ways to help normalise blood sugar levels, including by improving pancreatic function and increasing the availability of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels.</p>
<p>The researchers considered data from 16 clinical trials including 1,391 people who received 15 different herbal formulations. According to their findings, combining herbal medicines with lifestyle changes is twice as effective as lifestyle changes alone at normalising patients&#8217; blood sugar levels. Those given the herbal formulations were less likely to develop full blown diabetes during the study period. Trials included in the review lasted from one month to two years. No adverse effects were reported in any of the trials.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our results suggest that some Chinese herbal medicines can help to prevent diabetes, but we really need more research before we can confidently say that these treatments work,&#8221; says Grant. &#8220;The real value of the study is as guidance for further trials. We need to see more trials that make comparisons with placebos and other types of drugs, and better reporting on the outcomes of these trials.&#8221;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The term pH stands for potential hydrogen. It is the degree of concentration of hydrogen ions in a substance such as water, blood and food. pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14. The lower the pH reading &#8211; the more acidic a substance is. The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline the body is. A pH of 7 is neutral. Ph balance is the balance of acid and alkaline in all fluids and cells throughout your body. Our bodies are alkaline by design and acid by function. This means that our bodies function more efficiently when slightly alkaline, but bodily functions, such as digestion, are acid producing. So what can we do to ensure that our bodies remain more alkaline and balanced?</p>
<p>The human body&#8217;s metabolic process is naturally acid producing. However, this waste needs to be neutralized or &#8220;balanced&#8221; so it can be safely eliminated from the body without damaging tissues and organs that are responsible for detoxifying the body. Alkalinity is needed to neutralize and balance acidity. The presence of alkalinity in the body&#8217;s acid producing environment is counteractive to the onset of illness and disease and also prevents decomposition.</p>
<p>&#8220;Acidosis&#8221; refers to an acid pH. It is an imbalanced acidic condition of all bodily fluids. Almost all cellular functions in the body are sensitive to the pH of their fluids. If the pH falls too far to the acidic side the cells become poisoned in their own toxic wastes and will die. All chemical processes have an ideal pH. Your blood should have a pH of 7.35 &#8211; 7.45. Many studies show that people with a correct blood pH enjoy good health; whereas, people with a low, or acidic, pH are more likely to be ill. The slightest imbalance can cause serious illness and disease.</p>
<p>The body will do whatever it must to maintain the blood pH balance, and will continually steal acid neutralizing minerals from wherever necessary, such as calcium from bones and teeth. The blood will dump the acid into other body organs in an effort to detoxify itself. The organs then dump the acid back into the blood, creating a vicious cycle of trying to rid itself of acidity. This cycle can be ended with a properly balance pH.</p>
<p>Symptoms of mild cases of acidosis include headache, lack of energy, sleepiness, fast and shallow breathing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and loss of appetite. Acidosis can result in rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus, tuberculosis, osteoporoses, high blood pressure and most cancers.</p>
<p>Metabolic acidosis occurs when the body has more acidity then alkalinity in it. Eating a diet of excessive meats, grains and breads, dairy products, sugar, overcooked, refined and processed foods and fast foods, can lead to an acidic pH balance. Other factors can include overload from pollutants and chemicals, emotional stress and negative thinking. Even excessive exercising (past the point of exhaustion) causes acidity.</p>
<p>The most important way to stay alkaline is to maintain a healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>- Increase the amounts of vegetables and fruit (alkaline foods) that you eat while decreasing the amount of acid-forming foods, such as grains, dairy products, pasta and breads. Juicing vegetables can be an excellent way to increase your alkaline food intake.</p>
<p>Just because a fruit or vegetable may be acid, that doesn&#8217;t mean it will be acid when it is digested. When foods are digested, they turn into &#8220;ash&#8221;. This ash is what determines if a food is acid or alkaline.</p>
<p>- It is important to remember that the method of cooking will also have either an acidic or alkaline reaction. For example, a potato that is baked or boiled in its jacket is alkaline food, whereas a fried potato is acid-forming.</p>
<p>- Make sure you drink at least 2 liters of good water per day. Normal tap water falls short of being good for you. Most city water has additives such as chlorine and fluoride, which are acid forming. Distilled water, water treated by reverse-osmosis or alkaline waters are best.</p>

<p>- Exercise will tend to make the body more alkaline, but exercising excessively will become acid-forming.</p>
