More quality control issues at Johnson & Johnson (J&J) have spurred yet another consumer product recall. At least 2,200 bottles of Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion from lot number 0161LK have been found to be contaminated with coagulase-negative staphylococci, a highly-contagious, antibiotic-resistant pathogen that can cause crippling illness.

The recall was announced after tests conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed higher-than-normal levels of the pathogen that exceeded maximum levels. However, J&J says later tests conducted by an “independent laboratory” showed that the bacteria levels in the lot did not exceed maximum levels.

The tainted bottles were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, according to J&J, but are not being recalled at the consumer level. Though the company has pulled the contaminated lot from store shelves,
it is not asking people who already purchased bottles from the lot to return them.

The J&J recall announcement specifically states that the recall “is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse events and the potential for adverse health events is remote,” but rather out of “an abundance of caution.” Concerned individuals that already purchased lotion from the lot in question are free to contact the company for a refund at (877) 298-2525 if they choose to do so (http://www.aveeno.com/babycare/product-home).

J&J insists that even the recalled lotions are safe, and also claims that coagulase-negative staphylococci is a common and generally harmless pathogen. However, a 1999 study published in the journal Annual Review of Medicine explains that coagulase-negative staphylococci is highly transmissible, particularly in hospitals, and can cause central nervous system infections, native or prosthetic valve endocarditis, urinary tract infections, and endophthalmitis (http://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annurev.med.50.1.223).

Throughout the past year and a half, J&J recalled at least 12 different consumer products manufactured by McNeil Consumer Healthcare. These products included Children’s Benadryl Allergy Fastmelt Tablets, Tylenol 8 Hour, Motrin IB, Sudafed 24 Hour, Rolaids, and Tylenol Cold Liquid products (http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/page.jhtml?id=/include/news.inc).

Meanwhile, two longtime executives at J&J will be retiring in March, according to The Washington Post. Patrick Mutchler, group chairman for over-the-counter drugs, nutritionals and wellness and prevention products, and Pericles Stamatiades, head of global strategy for consumer products, will be departing after having worked at the company for 35 years and 28 years, respectively (http://www.washingtonpost.com).

A new study indicates that dried licorice root is effective against the bacteria which causes tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can lead to tooth loss. Reporting their findings in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Natural Products, researchers say that that two substances in dried licorice root may help prevent and treat tooth decay and gum disease.

Traditional healing, modern science

The dried root of the licorice plant has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Practitioners of TCM use dried licorice root for a variety of health concerns: to treat coughs, ulcers, sore throat, arthritis, lupus, liver disorders, food poisoning and diabetes. Licorice is known by herbalists to possess antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties. The medicinally used root is not an ingredient in the licorice candy sold in the US which uses the similarly flavored anise oil.

As modern medicine slowly begins to accept that traditional healing traditions have value, many herbal remedies proven by centuries of efficacy have been examined using scientific standards. In a previous study, clinical trials indicated that an injectable form of licorice root was effective against hepatitis C. However, mainstream medicine still has not officially approved licorice root as a treatment for any condition.

Corporate funding for herbal study

The recent study is a striking instance of strange bedfellows. In this case, corporate profits proved to be the champion of traditional herbal wisdom. The lead researcher for the study is Stefan Gafner, PhD, a scientist employed by Tom’s of Maine which markets natural personal care products, including toothpaste and dental floss. The company, started on a shoestring in 1970, was purchased by multinational conglomerate Colgate-Palmolive in 2006.

Gafner and his fellow researchers analyzed licorice root to identify the compounds work against bacteria. They found that two compounds, licoricidin and licorisoflavan A, offered the strongest anti-bacterial benefits. Both substances were shown to kill two of the major bacteria that were responsible for promoting gum disease. Licoricidin was also found to kill a third bacteria responsible for gum disease. In their article, the researchers say that these two licorice substances may treat or even prevent the oral infections which lead to tooth loss.

Establishing licorice root’s ability to fight oral infections will help many people. Statistics from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research indicate that nearly 92% of American adults and seniors have had some form of tooth decay in 59% of teens and 42% of children aged 11. More than 80% of adults in the US may have gum disease, often without knowing it. Gum disease, which in extreme cases can result in tooth loss, is also a risk factor in many types of heart and lung disease.

If you plan to use licorice to improve your oral hygiene, remember that natural remedies should be used with informed awareness. Herbal experts recommend that people with high blood pressure or heart disease exercise caution and not take large amounts of licorice over extended periods. Also, the herb is not recommended for pregnant women. Like most herbs, licorice root can interact with some prescription drugs, causing side-effects.

It is good to read about a corporate conglomerate’s profit motive put to good use for once, validating the wisdom of traditional herbal healing. It will be interesting to see if Colgate-Palmolive applies the information from this study to the oral hygiene products other than the Tom’s of Maine line. Many Colgate-Palmolive products use toxic chemicals including triclosan and fluoride. The conglomerate is still viewed negatively by many environmental activists, both for its marketing of disposable plastic products and for its New Jersey plant’s contribution to groundwater pollution. However, the company has made improvements in the past; for instance, declaring a moratorium on animal testing in 1999 following protests by animal rights groups.

Versus Acute Diarrhea
Using probiotics for treating sudden cases of infectious diarrhea in children is well studied. Good-quality studies have shown that probiotics (“Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG,” “L. reuteri,” “L. casei,” “Shirota,” and “Bifidobactrium factis”) shortened the duration of diarrhea caused by a virus. It seems, though, that probiotics are effective only for rotavirus-associated diarrhea, and not diarrhea triggered by another virus or bacteria. This is the most common form of viral diarrhea in the world, and affects children under the age of five mostly. It accounts for many hospital trips every year. Whatever the case, probiotics seems to work in relieving acute cases of diarrhea in infants and children, although only certain kinds show this beneficial effect. Only “Lactobacillus GG” has been proven.

Versus Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea
Antibiotics can cause up to 40% of diarrhea in hospitalized patients. And you thought they were supposed to do goodl! Well, they do, but a typical side effect is trouble in the gut. One common culprit is “C. difficile,” an organism that triggers the diarrhea episodes. Last decade, there were several large-scale studies on the effects of probiotics in this area. I’ve narrowed them down to the best six.

2002: A study finds that probiotics can be used to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea. “S. boulardii” and “Lactobacilli” are potentially useful.

2002: Seven trials totaling nearly 900 patients find a strong suggestion that probiotics are beneficial. While more studies are needed to prove a beneficial effect, two kinds stand out: “Lactobacillus” and “Saccharomyces.”

2005: Four of six studies find a significant reduction in the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea with “Lactobacillus.”

2005: In five studies totaling nearly 1,100 people with respiratory tract infections, the probiotic “S. boulardii” reduced the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea from 17.2% to 6.7%.

2006: Taking 31 studies totaling nearly 3,200 patients, researchers looked at a number of probiotic combinations. Different probiotics showed promising results, while only “S. boulardii” proved effective for “C. difficile” diarrhea.

2006: In about 700 patients, those treated with “Lactobacillus” or “S. boulardii” at a daily dose of at least five billion bacterial units showed promising results. Future studies are needed.

Researchers at the North Sichuan Medical College and Hospital in China conducted a study to determine whether supplementing these individuals with probiotics could help reduce rates of infection among traumatic brain injury patients.

They discovered that when probiotic bacteria were administered through an intravenous feeding tube over a 15-day period, individuals experienced fewer markers of inflammation and a heightened immune response when compared to a control group who received standard care.

Authors of the study said that since their sample size was small, further studies may be needed to support the use of probiotics in traumatic brain injury patients, as their final results may not be considered clinically significant.

“However probiotic therapy reduced the number of infections occurring after seven days, reduced the number of different antibiotics needed to treat infections, and shortened the length of time the patients were required to stay in ICU,” said study supervisor Jing-Ci Zhu.

One system particularly responsible for optimal well-being is your digestive system — a strong, yet delicate ecosystem that relies on the presence of good bacteria and specialized immune cells to control the presence of bad bacteria or other harmful invaders. In fact, your digestive health directly impacts your immune health, and vice versa, since 70 to 80 percent of your immune system is actually located in your digestive system.

When your digestive system malfunctions, it can result in poor nutrient absorption and malnourishment, leading to a number of chronic problems and symptoms like acid reflux, indigestion and irritable bowel disease. In order to avoid these complications, it’s important to understand exactly what happens in your digestive system and how it is connected to other vital systems within your body that influence immunity, energy, mood and even behavior.

Immune Health, Probiotics and Mood

Your immune system is an important part of digestive health: It is comprised of cells, proteins, tissues and organs that all work together to defend the body against bacteria, toxins, infections and diseases. Gastrointestinal immune cells are a vital part of the lymphoid branch of immunity, which secretes lymphocyte cells to attack harmful invaders. These gut-lymph tissues include specialized areas called Peyer’s Patches and other gut immune cells, which all work to identify and kill pathogens, toxins or other health-robbing substances we may have ingested into our system via the gastrointestinal (GI), or digestive, tract.

In addition to specialized immune cells, your GI tract is also home to numerous species of probiotics or good bacteria, which help prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, yeasts and parasites. Good bacteria are also critical for overall immunity. They have been shown to enhance the function of Natural Killer immune cells. Probiotics also form a barrier on the intestinal wall, serving as a powerful line of defense to prevent pathogens from being absorbed.

The many strains and species of probiotics or good bacteria in our digestive tract are vital to our health for a number of reasons. They assist in digestion, manufacture vitamins and protect against the overgrowth of disease-causing organisms. Recent research also suggests that each person’s internal ecosystem of friendly bacteria is unique, and can influence our neurology and mental states, including the development of our brains during infancy. Bacteria colonize the gut in the days following birth during a sensitive period of brain development. Studies show that microflora in the gut can influence behavior throughout our lives by inducing changes in the expression of certain genes that control brain and neurological function. Pre-clinical studies have likewise shown that higher levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut can reduce anxiety, depression and neurotic behavior, and even combat the effects of stress.

The Gut-Neuroendocrine System Connections

The neuroendocrine system (the hormonal and nervous systems that work closely together) also plays an important role in digestive and overall health. Your gastrointestinal system is the most abundant source of regulatory neurotransmitters and neuropeptides outside the brain. An example: Serotonin, one of the brain’s chemicals that influences mood, actually has its highest concentrations in the gut. Scientists and researchers are currently studying the numerous links between our nervous system, hormones and immune system. The gastrointestinal system serves as rich ground for observing these connections.

One interesting link is the improvement that many digestive-supporting herbs and supplements effect on brain and neurological function, hormone balance, immune health and more.

Natural Remedies

Supplements are especially important for digestive health. They can offer significant and relatively fast-acting support for components of your digestion that are not functioning optimally.

Here’s a list of key nutrients for digestive and overall health:

Probiotics and prebiotics: These are two of the most important supplements you can take to help restore healthy digestion. Probiotics provide live strains of friendly bacteria that are crucial for digestive and overall health. Prebiotics ensure that your friendly flora enjoy a nourishing environment in which they can thrive.

Zinc: An important nutrient for digestive health which also plays critical roles in hormone regulation, immune health and neurological function.

Chinese cardamom: Offers numerous benefits for digestion, increases antioxidant levels and boosts immunity. Also helps to combat unhealthy cellular growth and balance hormones with the compound Indole-3 Carbinol.

Cinnamon: Soothes digestive discomfort, improves digestive capacity, boosts immunity and balances blood sugar.

Ginger root: Improves digestion, reduces inflammation, purifies the GI tract, increases antioxidant levels and boosts immunity.

Fish oil: Reduces inflammation and heals GI tract lining, improves nutrient absorption, balances hormones, improves neurological function and boosts immunity.

Proteolytic enzymes: Increase digestive capacity and nutrient absorption, boost immunity and increase vital energy.

Additional Tips for Improving Digestive Health and Well-Being
There are many factors that influence the health of our digestive system. Some of the most common causes of digestive discomfort include poor diet, late meals, rushed eating, food allergies and, most of all, stress. Simply taking the time to slow down and eat healthy foods in a mindful way can greatly improve digestive health and relieve tension.

To improve overall digestion for optimal health:

Include an abundance of fiber in your diet from fresh fruits, vegetables and whole, unprocessed grains.

Avoid processed foods, commercial meats and trans-fats (unhealthy fats).

Have your doctor test for food allergies and sensitivities.

Refrain from eating for two to three hours before bedtime.

Drink plenty of filtered water and herbal teas for proper hydration.

Find healthy ways to relieve stress such as meditation, exercise and laughter.

Practice yoga for improving digestive function and reducing stress.

Limit your use of over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Limit caffeine and alcohol which damage friendly bacteria.

The Gluten-Free Movement

If you have ongoing digestive or immune issues, it is possible that you may have an undiagnosed gluten sensitivity, which is common for many people. Gluten-dense foods can interfere with digestive capacity and have also been found to contribute to the onset of inflammatory conditions, autoimmune disorders, neurological and behavioral illness, skin diseases, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue and a host of other degenerative conditions. If you suffer these symptoms and test negative for gluten intolerance or celiac disease (the autoimmune condition wherein gluten damages the small intestine), following a strict gluten-free diet for as little as a week or two may still help clear up your symptoms dramatically.

Time-Tested Wisdom Validated by Science

These intriguing connections confirm what traditional healing systems have proposed for thousands of years: Individual digestive ecosystems play a large role in how we look, feel, think and act. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches that there are direct relationships between different systems of the body. Western medicine is uncovering many of these same relationships, such as the complex gut/brain connection, from a scientific standpoint. These striking parallels between modern science and ancient healing wisdom will continue to become evident as our research-based understanding of human physiology sheds new light on time-tested philosophies of health and healing. This is particularly relevant to digestive-supporting botanicals and nutrients, which also offer numerous health benefits to other related systems in the body.

Many natural remedies offer broad-spectrum health. In the case of digestive health, however, the seemingly diverse effects offered by many digestive remedies give us a more in-depth perspective on the direct connections between gut health, immune health, brain function and overall well-being. For optimal health and wellness, listen to your gut!

This treatment has been around for ages. With everyone going towards natural alternatives photoluminescence therapy is making its come back.

“Photoluminescence” sounds high-tech, but it’s actually simple. “Photo” means light, and “luminescence” is emission of light. The treatment involves irradiating ultraviolet light onto a patient’s blood — a procedure which increases oxygenation and promotes healing.

The treatment device is safe, non-toxic, easy to administer, and drug-free.

Note: Administering photoluminescence is so simple that some experts say you can do it yourself at home with the right equipment and clear instructions (both easily obtained online).

This Historic Treatment is Making a Comeback

Photoluminescence therapy is not new. Also known as UB and UVBI (for ultraviolet blood irradiation), this therapy was popular in the 1930s for polio and other viral and bacterial infections.

According to Dr. Ron Kennedy of Santa Rosa California, the advent of vaccines and antibiotics shoved photoluminescence therapy so far into the shadows of disuse that it was nearly forgotten.

But now, he says, with the “dangers and lack of efficacy of vaccination increasingly appreciated, the development of dangerous antibiotic resistant species of bacteria, and with the difficulty eradicating many viruses, including those involved in AIDS, photoluminescence has once again come to be thought of as a viable alternative therapy.”

And it’s making a comeback in the hands of a small but growing number of practitioners.

Proven Benefits and No Harmful Effects

Emmett K. Knott was the first practitioner to “irradiate” or expose to light the blood of a human patient in 1928. By June of 1934, Mr. Knott and Dr. Virgil K. Hancock published their first article on the therapeutic powers of phototherapy.”

By June of 1942, the two had treated more than 6,000 patients with ultraviolet therapy — and nearly every time, it zapped infections and cured toxicity with no harmful effects.

Their work was reported in the most prestigious journals of the time. One respected physician, Dr. Rebbeck, wrote in the early 1940s that Hancock and Knott “had in the irradiation of blood with ultraviolet spectral energy, a therapy of more pronounced value than any other method known to date.”

During a 50-year period, doctors performed more than 300,000 clinical tests that repeatedly showed photoluminescence therapy to work.

It’s interesting to note that … not a single patient was lost during the course of all those studies.

A Simple Procedure With Fast Results

Photoluminescence therapy is administered by placing a catheter into one of the veins around the elbow (usually with a butterfly needle — a small plastic catheter attached to a short needle). Drawn blood travels through a small glass chamber, called a cuvette, where it is exposed twice to ultraviolet light before getting re-introduced to the patient’s blood stream.

Just 5% of a patient’s total blood volume is treated over a 20-minute period — but the treated blood spreads throughout the body with a rapid, detoxifying effect.

Blood oxygen levels rise, as does resistance to viral and bacterial infections. Many people feel improvements in chronic conditions after just a few treatments. In severe cases, patients may require 10 or more treatments. But usually, 3 to 5 treatments are sufficient.

Photoluminescence Against Cancer

Photoluminescence therapy is still experimental as a cancer treatment, but researchers at Yale are examining photoluminescence’s effect on certain types of lymphoma. And from the late 40s through the mid 60s, an American surgeon named Robert Olney conducted in-depth research of photoluminescence and cancer.

Olney was a respected surgeon whose studies were published in many prestigious and widely read journals, including American Journal of Surgery and Journal of the International College of Surgeons. In the 1960s, Olney published 5 case histories of cancer patients he had treated with photoluminescence.

One dramatic Olney case history featured a 30-year-old white male admitted to the hospital with generalized malignant melanoma. Some 11 years earlier, the patient had undergone surgery to remove a malignant melanoma from his right arm.

When first observed by Olney, the patient had a mass in his chest below the clavicle — and from there he quickly developed metastases all over his body, including severe swelling from tumor growth in his abdomen.

The patient’s breathing was labored, he coughed constantly, and he was blue in the face from lack of oxygen. He underwent photoluminescence therapy immediately, every 3 days during the first week, and then once a week thereafter.

After 3 weeks, the tumor mass in his right armpit disappeared, as did the tumor on his right chest wall. Abdomen swelling subsided. Tumor masses in his torso shrank. After 6 weeks, the patient’s breathing eased, his swollen right leg returned to normal, and he was entirely free of pain.

Pain Free, Low Cost, Proven Effective

Research has shown that numerous medical conditions can be significantly improved with photoluminescence therapy, such as:

Viral Infections

Candidiasis (fungal infections)

Venom Poisoning

Bacterial Infections

Chronic Fatigue

Poor Oxygen

Toxicity

Blood Poisoning

Poor Circulation

Low Blood Counts

Allergies

Asthma

Emphysema

Cancer-adjunctive conditions

Diabetes Complications

Poor Immune Function

Rheumatologic Diseases

Arthritis-adjunctive conditions

Current studies are examining the effects of photoluminescence on Alzheimer’s disease, malaria, and cancer.

For most people, photoluminescence therapy has no risks or side effects.

It is contraindicated only in people diagnosed with Porphyria, hereditary metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria, exeroderma pigmentosum, acute photodermatitis, and a hypersensitivity to sunlight or other forms of ultraviolet light.

In all other cases, the therapy has demonstrated no adverse effects. This pain-free, low cost, and proven effective therapy is now offered by a growing number of licensed health practitioners.

To find a physician in your area, just type “photoluminescence practitioners” or “Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation (UBI) therapy” in any search engine.

They have been identified as the dirtiest surface Americans encounter on the way to work, according to a recently released study by Kimberley-Clark Professional, a unit of personal hygiene giant Kimberley-Clark Corp.

A team of hygienists test-swabbed hundreds of surfaces in U.S. cities to see what objects we touch every day, that breed the worst kinds of bacteria and viruses. These swabs were taken in big cities such as Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Philadelphia.

Gas pumps turned out to be number one on the list, as breeding grounds for all sorts of filthy bacteria and bugs.
Other top foul offenders not far down the list included parking meters, kiosks, crosswalk buttons, vending machine buttons, escalator rails, ATM buttons and vending machine buttons in shopping malls.

Testers analyzed swabs of all the analyzed surfaces for levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which signals the presence of animal, vegetable, bacteria, yeast or mold cells. The strikingly high levels found on surfaces like gas pump handles suggest they can easily be transmitting all kinds of illness, researchers said.

Think twice before grabbing that gas pump

No one ever takes the time to clean gas pump handles for one, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are dangerously filthy. Consider then how many people touch that same gas pump handle on a daily basis. There is no telling what types of illness-causing germs are swarming on these handles, just waiting for another surface to be transferred to, such as your hands. In fact, germs from people’s hands can transfer seven times before leaving the skin.

How to protect yourself

unfortunately, most of us don’t have much of a choice — we HAVE to fill our cars up with gas. So how do we protect ourselves from these nasty bugs? If you’re thinking hand sanitizer is the obvious fix, think again.

NN published an article last year about a study done by the University of Virginia (UV) that found hand sanitizers do practically nothing to prevent the transmission of viruses like influenza and rhinovirus, a Major cause of the common cold (http://www.naturalnews.com/029786_h…).

Most hand sanitizers are also loaded with toxic chemicals that get absorbed into the skin and can cause other health problems. Ultimately they will not protect you from getting sick.

A better way to avoid the germ overgrowth on gas pump handles and other dirty surfaces (thus avoiding viral and bacterial infections) is to use paper towels when grabbing and holding gas pump handles, or carry around disposable latex gloves to protect your hands.

Wash your hands with antibacterial soap right after filling your car up with gas and also be sure to take plenty of natural vitamin C and vitamin D on a regular basis.

Eating powerful superfoods like garlic, and drinking plenty of clean water will also help you build your immunity in order to protect you from the nasty illness-causing bacteria on dirty surfaces.

Imagine if a fruit juice could actually boost your health significantly, in much the same way that some drugs are purported to. Wouldn’t drinking a delicious beverage be preferable to swallowing a pill or downing a horrible tasting spoonful of medicine? If you answered “yes,” then read further to find out more.

Researchers at the University of Florida did some pretty interesting investigations recently into T cells. T cells are one of the two main types of white blood cells in your body that are crucial to the proper functioning of your immune system. This is because these specialized cells are responsible for attacking any invaders, such as toxins or bacteria. They do this in a special way. They bind to the invaders and help remove them from your body. Your body contains millions of T cells that can respond to virtually any antigen.

Now — back to the study. The research team conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. In the study, 100% grape juice made from Concord grapes or a placebo beverage was consumed by 85 individuals daily for nine weeks. The participants were asked not to consume other red, blue, and purple fruits during the study. Blood samples, taken at the beginning and the end, were analyzed for T-cell numbers, along with vitamin C,
antioxidant capacity, and the ability to protect DNA from strand breaks.

The researchers found that those consuming the grape juice had significantly greater numbers of circulating T cells. They also had higher vitamin C levels compared to the placebo group. The placebo group had lower antioxidant activity, less T-cell proliferation, and increased DNA strand breaks when compared to their grape-juice-drinking counterparts. The researchers concluded with this health advice: regular consumption of purple grape juice could benefit immunity in healthy, middle-aged human subjects.

Go ahead and do your T cells a favor — add some grape juice to your diet today. You’ll also be boosting your nutritional health by getting an extra dose of vitamin C.

Feel like your life is in a rut and going nowhere? Help with your mood and attitude may reside not only in your head but in your digestive tract. The friendly bacteria that live down there, known as probiotics, may produce neurochemicals that could improve your mental outlook and beneficially alter your brain chemistry.

Your digestive tract is home to about a thousand-trillion bacteria that are necessary for optimal health. These microorganisms extract nutrients from your food, help the immune system fight off infections and keep pathogenic bacteria from colonizing the cells of the intestines. They may also determine whether your metabolism functions efficiently enough to keep your weight under control.

Health Helpers

Your health would suffer terribly without the miniscule organisms that protect a large part of your body. And now researchers are finding that these little bugs may also influence your mood
and how you act with friends, family and business associates.

In laboratory experiments at the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute, scientists demonstrated that changing the types and amounts of bacteria in the gut can shift passive behavior to a more aggressive stance. The right probiotics have the potential to metamorphose a milquetoast Clark Kent into a strident superhero.

To demonstrate this type of effect, scientists took animals bred to be laid back and passive and colonized their alimentary canals with bacteria from animals that were more daring and active. After the probiotic transplant, the animals became more active, exploratory and socially adventuresome. Instead of acting like a wallflower, each was now the life of the party.1

Healthy Probiotics, Healthy Mind

Interestingly, the theory that conditions in your gastrointestinal tract can affect your mood is not new. It originated more than 70 years ago. In the first half of the 20th century, dermatologists John H. Stokes and Donald M. Pillsbury found evidence that your emotions varied with the microorganisms in your gut and that depression was linked to unhealthy substances crossing over from your intestines into the bloodstream (leaky gut syndrome). They observed that when you lacked probiotics and your intestinal walls were compromised, you were vulnerable to inflammation of your internal organs, your skin and your mind. In that way, these doctors wrote in 1930, the state of your digestive tract was intimately involved with depression problems, acne and symptoms of anxiety.2

These doctors also recognized that if you had very little stomach acid, pathogens were more likely to invade your digestive tract and cause health issues. (Normally, stomach acid kills off many of the problematic microorganisms in food.) As treatment, they recommended the most readily available probiotics of their day: yogurt (containing the acidophilus bacteria), along with cod liver oil.

In other words, they told their patients to take probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids (found in the cod liver oil), medical advice that is only now starting to be accepted by mainstream medicine.

Probiotics for a Better Mood

A range of recent studies support the notion that probiotics can boost your mood. Scientists in France found that a month of taking probiotics significantly alleviated people’s feelings of anxiety, stress, depression, anxiety and anger. In addition, probiotics were found to reduce the secretion of cortisol (a damaging stress hormone).3 In a British study of about four dozen people who suffered irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), researchers found that prebiotic supplements (fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria) reduced anxiety.4

Writing in the journal Gut Pathogens, Whitney Bowe and Alan Logan point out that it is remarkable that these ideas linking probiotics, the brain and the rest of the body were recognized way back in 1930. But today, these scientists say, we have a chance to scientifically establish how bacteria in the gut communicate with “mood-regulating neurotransmitters.”5

Because we can now more closely observe how the brain develops, scientists are examining how probiotics actually change the structure of the brain in beneficial ways. “The take-home message is that gut bacteria influences anxiety-like behavior through alterations in the way the brain is wired,” says Jane Foster, a researcher at the Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. Foster believes that the probiotics in your gut not only influence your mood, but can change your mind and temperament.

Increasingly, the research on these tiny creatures that live in our digestive tract supports the notion that if you want a dynamic personality, you need dynamic probiotics.

Bt toxin has now also been detected in the blood of 93 percent of pregnant women tested; 80 percent of babies; and 67 percent of non-pregnant women.

Mounting evidence shows that the Bt-toxin produced in GM corn and cotton plants is toxic to humans and mammals and triggers immune system responses.

The only human feeding study every published on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) was conducted on Roundup Ready soybeans, in which some of the subjects were found to develop Roundup Ready gut bacteria as a result of consuming GM soybeans.

Monsanto are about to introduce a new variety of sweet corn that includes the worst of both worlds: two types of Bt-toxin, and the Roundup Ready gene. So besides containing built-in insecticide, toxic Roundup herbicide will also accumulate in the kernels.

By Jeffrey Smith

When U.S. regulators approved Monsanto’s genetically modified “Bt” corn, they knew it would add a deadly poison into our food supply. That’s what it was designed to do. The corn’s DNA is equipped with a gene from soil bacteria called Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) that produces the Bt-toxin. It’s a pesticide; it breaks open the stomach of certain insects and kills them.

But Monsanto and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) swore up and down that it was only insects that would be hurt. The Bt-toxin, they claimed, would be completely destroyed in the human digestive system and not have any impact on all of us trusting corn-eating consumers.

Oops. A study just proved them wrong.

Doctors at Sherbrooke University Hospital in Quebec found the corn’s Bt-toxin in the blood of pregnant women and their babies, as well as in non-pregnant women.i (Specifically, the toxin was identified in 93% of 30 pregnant women, 80% of umbilical blood in their babies, and 67% of 39 non-pregnant women.) The study has been accepted for publication in the peer reviewed journal Reproductive Toxicology.

According to the UK Daily Mail, this study, which “appears to blow a hole in” safety claims, “has triggered calls for a ban on imports and a total overhaul of the safety regime for genetically modified (GM) crops and food.” Organizations from England to New Zealand are now calling for investigations and for GM crops to be halted due to the serious implications of this finding.

There’s already plenty of evidence that the Bt-toxin produced in GM corn and cotton plants is toxic to humans and mammals and triggers immune system responses. The fact that it flows through our blood supply, and that is passes through the placenta into fetuses, may help explain the rise in many disorders in the US since Bt crop varieties were first introduced in 1996.

In government-sponsored research in Italy ii , mice fed Monsanto’s Bt corn showed a wide range of immune responses. Their elevated IgE and IgG antibodies, for example, are typically associated with allergies and infections. The mice had an increase in cytokines, which are associated with “allergic and inflammatory responses.” The specific cytokines (interleukins) that were elevated are also higher in humans who suffer from a wide range of disorders, from arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, to MS and cancer .

Elevated interleukins: IL-6

Associations: Rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, various types of cancer (multiple myeloma and prostate cancer)

Elevated interleukins: IL-13

Associations: Allergy, allergic rhinitis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Elevated interleukins: MIP-1b

Associations: Autoimmune disease and colitis.

Elevated interleukins: IL-12p70

Associations: Inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis

The young mice in the study also had elevated T cells (gamma delta), which are increased in people with asthma, and in children with food allergies, juvenile arthritis, and connective tissue diseases. The Bt corn that was fed to these mice, MON 810, produced the same Bt-toxin that was found in the blood of women and fetuses.

When rats were fed another of Monsanto’s Bt corn varieties called MON 863, their immune systems were also activated, showing higher numbers of basophils, lymphocytes, and white blood cells. These can indicate possible allergies, infections, toxins, and various disease states including cancer. There were also signs of toxicity in the liver and kidneys.iii

Natural Bt is dangerous

Farmers have used Bt-toxin from soil bacteria as a natural pesticide for years. But they spray it on plants, where it washes off and biodegrades in sunlight. The GM version is built-in; every plant cell has its own spray bottle. The toxin doesn’t wash off; it’s consumed. Furthermore, the plant-produced version of the poison is thousands of times more concentrated than the spray; is designed to be even more toxic; and has properties of known allergens—it actually fails the World Health Organization’s allergen screening tests.iv

The biotech companies ignore the substantial difference between the GM toxin and the natural bacteria version, and boldly claim that since the natural spray has a history of safe use in agriculture, it’s therefore OK to put the poison directly into our food. But even this claim of safe use of Bt spray ignores peer-reviewed studies showing just the opposite.

When natural Bt-toxin was fed to mice, they had tissue damage, immune responses as powerful as cholera toxinv , and even started reacting to other foods that were formerly harmless.vi Farm workers exposed to Bt also showed immune responses.vii The EPA’s own expert Scientific Advisory Panel said that these mouse and farm worker studies “suggest that Bt proteins could act as antigenic and allergenic sources.”viii But the EPA ignored the warnings. They also overlooked studiesix showing that about 500 people in Washington state and Vancouver showed allergic and flu-like symptoms when they were exposed to the spray when it was used to kill gypsy moths.

Bt cotton linked to human allergies, animal deaths

Indian farm workers are suffering from rashes and itching and other symptoms after coming into contact with Bt cotton.

Now thousands of Indian farm laborers are suffering from the same allergic and flu-like symptoms as those in the Pacific Northwest simply from handling genetically engineered cotton plants that produce Bt-toxin. According to reports and records from doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies, as well as numerous investigative reports and case studies, workers are struggling with constant itching and rashes; some take antihistamines every day in order to go to work.

It gets worse.

All thirteen buffalo of a small Indian village died after grazing for a single day on Bt cotton plants.

When they allow livestock to graze on the Bt cotton plants after harvest, thousands of sheep, goats, and buffalo died. Numerous others got sick. I visited one village where for seven to eight years they allowed their buffalo to graze on natural cotton plants without incident. But on January 3rd, 2008, they allowed their 13 buffalo to graze on Bt cotton plants for the first time. After just one day’s exposure, all died. The village also lost 26 goats and sheep.

One small study in Andhra Pradesh reported that all six sheep that grazed on Bt cotton plants died within a month, while the three controls fed natural cotton plants showed no adverse symptoms.

Living pesticide factories inside US?

Getting back to the Bt-toxin now circulating in the blood of North American adults and newborns—how did it get there? The study authors speculate that it was consumed in the normal diet of the Canadian middle class. They even suggest that the toxin may have come from eating meat from animals fed Bt corn—as most livestock are.

I’d like to speculate on another possible source. But I warn you, it’s not pretty.

The only human feeding study every published on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) was conducted on Roundup Ready soybeans. Here’s their back story: Scientists found bacteria growing in a chemical waste dump near their factory, surviving the presence of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. The herbicide normally kills bacteria, but this organism had some special gene that allowed it to survive. So Monsanto scientists figured, “Let’s put it into the food supply!”

By forcing that gene from that bacterium into soybean plants’ DNA, the plants then survive an otherwise deadly dose of Roundup herbicide—hence the name Roundup Ready.

In the human study, some of the subjects were found to have Roundup Ready gut bacteria! This means that sometime in the past, from eating one or more meals of GM soybeans, the gene that had been discovered in the chemical waste dump and forced into the soy, had transferred into the DNA of bacteria living inside their intestines—and continued to function. That means that long after we stop eating GMOs, we may still have dangerous GM proteins produced continuously inside of us.

When the results of the study emerged, the funding from the pro-GMO UK government mysteriously dried up, so they were not able to see if the same type of gene transfer happens with Bt genes from, say, corn chips. If it does, it means that eating Bt corn might turn our intestinal flora into living pesticide factories—continually manufacturing Bt-toxin from within our digestive systems.

I don’t know of a test that can confirm that this is happening, but the Canada study may be showing the results—where Bt-toxins are found in the blood of a very high percentage of people.

If the “living pesticide factory” hypothesis is correct, we might speculate even further. Bt-toxin breaks open the stomach of insects. Could it similarly be damaging the integrity of our digestive tracts? The biotech companies insist that Bt-toxin doesn’t bind or interact with the intestinal walls of mammals, and therefore humans. But here too they ignore peer-reviewed published evidence showing that Bt-toxin does bind with mouse small intestines and with intestinal tissue from rhesus monkeys.xi In the former study, they even found “changes in the electrophysiological properties” of the organ after the Bt-toxin came into contact.xii

If Bt-toxins were causing holes in the intestinal walls of newborns, the passage of undigested foods and toxins into the blood from the digestive tract could be devastating. Scientists speculate that it may lead to autoimmune diseases and food allergies. Furthermore, since the blood-brain barrier is not developed in newborns, toxins may enter the brain causing serious cognitive problems. Some healthcare practitioners and scientists are convinced that this is the apparent mechanism for autism.

Thus, if Bt genes were colonizing the bacteria living in the digestive tract of North Americans, we might see an increase in gastrointestinal problems, autoimmune diseases, food allergies, and childhood learning disorders—since 1996 when Bt crops came on the market. Physicians have told me that they indeed are seeing such an increase.

The discovery of Bt-toxin in our blood does not confirm all this speculation, but it does provide food for thought. And hopefully, that food is non-GMO—but not if Monsanto has its way. They are now introducing a new variety of sweet corn that has two types of Bt-toxin, and also has the Roundup Ready gene. So besides containing the insecticide, their toxic Roundup herbicide will also accumulate in the kernals.

Our Institute for Responsible Technology joins other organizations worldwide calling for an immediate ban on GM food crops, and the commencement of rigorous independent scientific research on the safety of GMOs in general, and Bt-toxin in particular.

GMO Awareness Week

Your Action Plan

The simplest way to avoid GM foods is to buy whole, certified organic foods. By definition, foods that are certified organic must never intentionally use GM organisms, produced without artificial pesticides and fertilizers and from an animal reared without the routine use of antibiotics, growth promoters or other drugs. Additionally, grass-fed beef will not have been fed GM corn feed. You can also look for foods that are “non-GMO verified” by the Non-GMO Project.

Fortunately, we now have a practical plan to end this disaster. By educating the public about the risks of GM foods through a massive education campaign, and launching a ballot initiative in California for 2012, which will require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods and food ingredients, our plan is to generate a tipping point of consumer rejection to make GMOs a thing of the past.

Several organizations, including Mercola.com, the Organic Consumers Association, the Institute for Responsible Technology, and even the Environmental Working Group (who produced the Dining in the Dark video above) are getting actively involved. But we do need your help.

Here’s how you can get involved during this GM Awareness week:

If you live in California, please volunteer to collect signatures for the ballot initiative, starting in early November. Short training sessions will be provided. Sign up here. (For more information see: The California Ballot Initiative: Taking Down Monsanto.) Also remember to share this information with family and friends in California!

Whether you live in California or not, please make a donation to the Institute for Responsible Technology to further this historic effort!

Talk to organic producers and stores and ask them to actively support the California Ballot. It may be the only chance we have to have to label genetically engineered foods!

Last but not least, distribute WIDELY the Non-GMO Shopping Guide to help you identify and avoid foods with GMOs. You can also download the free iPhone application that is available in the iTunes store. You can find it by searching for ShopNoGMO in the applications

Kombucha tea is a little different from regular tea. It’s a special concoction made from tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. This drink is sometimes called kombucha mushroom tea. Kombucha isn’t actually a mushroom though — it’s a colony of bacteria and yeast. Kombucha tea is made by adding this colony of bacteria and yeast to sugar and tea, and allowing the mix to ferment. The tea contains vinegar, B vitamins and a host of other chemical compounds.

There have been many health benefits attributed to Kombucha tea, but little scientific evidence to back up these claims. It might be worthwhile, therefore, to take a look at the results of a new clinical trial that verifies at least one health benefit associated with the fermented drink: improved liver health.

Researchers at the Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology in Jadavpur University, India, investigated the antioxidant property of kombucha tea. Specifically, the researchers wanted to know how kombucha tea would perform when pitted against cytotoxicity induced by tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) in mice liver cells. TBPH is organic peroxide that causes oxidative stress resulting in organ disease.

The researchers found that exposure to TBHP
caused a drop in cell function, increased membrane leakage and disturbed the antioxidant processes within the liver cells. TBHP exposure also disrupted mitochondrial membrane potential and induced cell death — not a good series of events at all! However, when the cells were treated with kombucha tea, the fermented drink counteracted the changes in the mitochondria of the cells and prevented cell death.

The kombucha tea treatment also reversed TBHP-induced liver toxicity with a significant efficiency. The researchers speculated that this may be due to the formation of special antioxidant molecules. The research team also found that the radical scavenging activities of kombucha were found to be significant. They concluded that kombucha tea has the potential to heal TBPH oxidative stress and liver cell death.

You can find kombucha tea in most health food stores. Get your doctor’s advice before trying the tea: some people have reported allergic-type reactions.

Many readers are likely familiar with the more common home remedies for curing acne… tea tree oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and burdock root. However, because acne is such a wide-spread and troubling problem, scientists are continuing to research new natural substances that are effective against this common issue. Both in vitro and human studies conducted over the last four years around the world have uncovered even more natural substances which are effective against acne.

Propionibacterium acnes is the bacteria most frequently linked to acne. This bacteria is almost always present on the skin of adults and adolescents. The bacteria feed off fatty acids found in sebum. If a follicle becomes blocked, the bacteria grow rapidly and secrete substances which break down the skin and form an acne lesion.
Therefore, much of the research on natural substances that treat acne have centered on finding substances that are effective against Propionibacterium acnes. Try the following five natural substances for a powerful anti-acne defense.

1. Licorice: Researchers at the Skin Research Institute in Korea conducted research published in July 2008 that explored the role of Chinese herbs as agents against acne. They discovered that Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) had anti-bacterial properties against P. acnes. Apply licorice root extract directly to blemishes and use licorice root tea as a facial wash.

2. Echinacea: Another in vitro study conducted at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada used a standardized preparation of Echinacea against P. acnes. This research was published in September 2009 and showed that Echinacea both killed the bacteria and helped reverse inflammation brought on by the bacteria. Consume Echinacea internally in the form of either organic tea or capsules and apply Echinacea extract directly to pimples as an “on the spot” treatment.

3. Resveratrol: Researchers at the University of Naples in Naples, Italy published research in April 2011 that showed that the administration of a resveratrol containing gel improved acne symptoms in patients previously afflicted. Resveratrol is a substance naturally produced by grapes and other plants. The researchers in this experiment applied resveratrol gel once a day to acne-prone skin.

4. Basil Oil: Researchers at Naresuan University in Thailand conducted an in vitro study on the effect various basil oil preparations have on P. acnes. They discovered that sweet basil oil and holy basil oil were shown to have significant anti-bacterial effects against P. acnes. In this study, the sweet basil oil had higher activity against P. acnes than the holy basil oil did, although they both were active against it. Dilute basil oil in a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) and apply to the skin to control acne.

5. Hops: Another study conducted in Washington D.C. and published in July 2007 showed that hops extract had significant activity against the most common acne-causing bacteria. Hops extract can be used externally as an astringent to cleanse the skin and to prevent acne outbreaks.

Acne is an embarrassing and annoying condition, but using one or more of the aforementioned lesser known home remedies for curing will get your skin looking clean and clear again.

Did you know… that a salt water flush does a superior (and inexpensive) job at detoxifying your colon than a colonic irrigation procedure?

Perhaps you’ve heard the saying: “Death begins in the colon.” Indeed, as toxic debris from inadequate and infrequent elimination gathers in the colon, it produces poisons that can slowly, but surely, cause disease and, consequently, death.

Experts say that approximately 85% of Americans suffer from poor digestion and incomplete elimination. To understand the effects, picture a piece of meat rotting away when it’s unrefrigerated. Lactobacilli turns the meat sour … the biochemical compounds produced by the bacteria as they grow causes the meat to smell bad … putrefying bacteria decomposes the animal proteins … and so on and so forth. It’s not a pretty sight –or smell.

Now, picture that putrefying food happening inside your body,
in the company of parasites of the intestine, colon, and organs.

When these parasites feed on body tissues, they produce wastes. Instead of your body obtaining the nutrients you need from the food, it allows those wastes to enter into the bloodstream, along with other byproducts of rotting, undigested food. The waste products then pass through the arterial wall and slowly overwhelm your system.

Eventually, these toxins block your body’s natural ability to flush out poisons that — over time — can kill you.

For all of these reasons, colon cleansing is an essential part of routine health maintenance. But professional colonic irrigation (also called colonics or colon hydrotherapy) are expensive and require a visit to a clinic.

For those seeking to detoxify your body naturally, an inexpensive, safe alternative (or supplement) to colonics, the saltwater flush accomplishes a very thorough inner cleanse you can do yourself at home. salt water flush

Saltwater flushes have none of the risks of customary colonics or enemas, and the cleansing effect reaches the entire digestive tract. In contrast, colonics and enemas reach only the colon or a small part of it.

Saltwater flushes are very safe and have no harmful side effects.

What is a Saltwater Flush?

Salt has long been used as a harmless preservative and disinfectant. The salt in the saltwater cleanse stimulates the body to repair itself in the same way as when you soak an external wound in saltwater or gargle saltwater for a sore throat.

Think of the saltwater flush as a bath for the inside of your body, where it draws toxins out from the entire digestive tract. When you imagine all of the waste products trapped in your digestive system — not unlike the slime and build-up that accumulates inside a garden hose or household pipes — it makes good sense that your insides benefit from a good washing.

An Amazingly Simple Procedure

Ingredients:

2 level teaspoons unrefined, non-iodized sea salt (not iodized table salt or Epsom salt)

1 quart (32 oz) purified water, lukewarm

Equipment:

Quart jar (glass)

Straw

Kettle for slightly warming water (do not microwave)

Instructions:

Put 2 teaspoons of salt into quart jar.

Pour in warm water and stir.

Drink the entire 32 oz of saltwater first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, as quickly as possible. Most people find it easier to drink with a straw.

After drinking the saltwater; lie on your right side for 30 minutes. This helps the saltwater reach the lower right hand side of the stomach, where the opening to the small intestine is located.

After 30 minutes, you are free to move about as you wish, though you’ll want to remain near the bathroom.

What to Expect During the Cleanse

Once in the small intestines, the saltwater stimulates contractions that propel the solution through your digestive system. Within an hour you should hear liquids gurgling in your abdomen, especially if you massage the area.

Everyone is unique, but most likely you’ll feel the urge to eliminate within an hour or two. Most people will have multiple eliminations, and intense diarrhea is not uncommon as the saltwater quickly cleanses the entire digestive tract.

Vomiting can also occur. In fact, at one time hospitals used a procedure similar to the saltwater flush to induce vomiting. If you struggle to keep the solution down the first time, take heart that this reaction can be overcome in time.

The flush process is intensified by gravity as it rapidly expels water from the body. As a result, it can be uncomfortable, but the process is swift and the discomfort should improve quickly after the cleanse.

Until you are certain that the flush is complete, take care not to pass gas except on the toilet — what you think is gas may actually be more liquid.

Tips on Practicing the Salt Water Flush

You might want to drink an herbal laxative tea the night before the flush to intensify and speed the cleansing process.

You might also speed the process slightly by crouching down and massaging your abdomen to help break up waste matter. Vigorous abdominal exercise may have a similar benefit.

The saltwater flush is a highly effective way to expel, detoxify your body naturally of toxins and waste. From this salt water flush you will have better digestion, increased energy, feel like a fresher you, and even weight loss.

The following herbal listing is, with few exceptions, drawn from the above listing of the herbs included in the best cancer formulas. Carefully examining the information which follows will help you understand the attributes of each of those herbs.

1 – The ideal anti-cancer formula should attack and destroy cancer tissue. Of the herbs listed in the formulas, here are the ones which destroy tumors.
DISCUTIENTS—these are herbs which dissolve and remove tumors and abnormal growths. They can be used as poultices, fomentations, and/ or taken internally.
Burdock root Red clover tops
Chaparral Sorrel Garlic

2 - The ideal anti-cancer formula should attack and destroy bacteria and viruses. Since there is good reason to believe that cancer may be a bacteria or virus, the formula should include an herb which is “antibiotic”; that is, which inhibits the growth of, and destroys, viruses and bacteria, and strengthens the body’s immune system.

ANTIBIOTICS—these are herbs which inhibit the growth of, and destroy, viruses and bacteria, and strengthen the body’s immune system.
Chaparral Garlic
Echinacea Goldenseal

Also helpful would be an herb which prevented the growth of more bacteria during the cleansing process.
ANTISEPTICS—these herbs prevent the growth of bacteria.
Barberry Garlic
Echinacea Goldenseal

3 - The ideal anti-cancer formula should purify the blood, in order to help rid the body of toxins, in general, and also portions of the cancer tissue as it is being absorbed into the blood stream.
Here are herbs, in the above list, which do this:

ALTERATIVES—these are herbs which purify the blood. They usually do this by cleaning out the spleen, liver, kidneys, and bowels. As a rule, these herbs are best used for a lengthy period of time, so that the detoxification will not occur too rapidly and overwhelm the body’s abilities to discharge those toxins. Of course, nutrition must be corrected at the same time that alternative herbs are taken.
Barberry Goldenseal
Burdock root Gotu kola
Cayenne Licorice root
Chaparral Oregon grape root
Chickweed Poke root
Cleavers Prickly ash
Comfrey Red clover tops
Dandelion Rhubarb
Echinacea Sassafras
Garlic Yellow dock
Ginseng

4 - The ideal anti-cancer formula should help clean out the liver. This is crucial, since the blood stream sends the toxins from the broken-down tumor to the liver to be ejected. When the cleansing occurs too fast (which can easily happen if the diet and herbal formula is correct), the liver can become overloaded—and stop functioning. This is called hepatic coma, and death results.

CHOLAGOGUES—these herbs help open the bile ducts and promote the flow of bile, thus aiding the liver in cleaning itself out.
Barberry
Goldenseal
Cayenne
Yellow dock
Dandelion

Note: The Gerson Institute has found that coffee enemas are far and away the most powerful, yet safe, means of emptying the bile ducts and thus cleaning out the liver. But it must only be done when high levels of nutrients and vitamin and mineral replacement is being made! It would be helpful if, at the same time, the liver could be strengthened. But this may not be crucial.

HEPATICS—these are herbs which strengthen, tone, and stimulate the secretive functions of the liver.
Aloe vera
Barberry

5 - It would also be helpful to strengthen the organs of elimination.

LIVER TONICS—these herbs increase the energy of the liver.
Barberry
Cleavers
Buckthorn bark
Mistletoe

GALLBLADDER TONICS—the following herbs strengthen the gallbladder.
Goldenseal
Oregon grape root

KIDNEY TOPICS—these herbs strengthen the kidneys so they can work better.
Burdock root
Mistletoe
Cleavers

INTESTINAL TONICS—these herbs energize the gastro-intestinal tract.
Barberry
Goldenseal
Cascara sagrada
Rhubarb

6 - Additional flushing of toxins is also needed during the cleansing process.

LYMPHATICS—these herbs stimulate and cleanse the lymphatic system.
Chaparral
Oregon grape root
Dandelion
Poke root
Echinacea
Yellow dock
Garlic

ANTI-CATARRHALS—these herbs help rid the body of catarrh.
Bayberry
Garlic
Cayenne
Ginger
Comfrey

7 - During the cleansing process, it would be well to help soothe the gastro-intestinal tract.

MUCILAGES—these are herbs which tend to soothe inflamed parts. Slippery elm is the best of them.
Chickweed
Slippery elm
Comfrey

8 - It might be helpful if an herb could be included which relieved pain during the recovery process. Yet it is now known that cancer never causes pain! It is not the tumor but the toxic overload in the later stages which produces the pain! As soon as the toxins are being reduced, by elimination through the bowels and kidneys, the pain which cancer patients are experiencing lessens and stops. The Gerson Institute has found that, when pain occurs, coffee enemas flush out the liver and the pain subsides. They also use chamomile to lessen gastro-intestinal pains.

NERVINES—these herbs help relieve pain (yet are unlikely to stop cancer pain since it is caused by a toxic overload).
Chamomile Mistletoe
Gravel root Wood betony

ANODYNES—the following herbs relieve pain. They do this by decreasing the excitability of the nerves and nerve centers. Anti-spasmodic (antiparalysis) herbs are quite similar in function.
Echinacea
White willow

SUMMARY
It is of interest that, in the above listings, certain herbs, known to have anti-cancer properties, are continually repeated. They are:
Burdock root
Echinacea
Barberry

Also repeated frequently are chaparral, goldenseal, mistletoe, dandelion, etc. In addition, the four Essiac herbs are all there:
Burdock root
Sorrel
Rhubarb root
Slippery elm bark

Doctors Health Press prides itself on reporting on front- line, groundbreaking treatments for the diseases that run through society. On that note, we bring now a glimpse of future cancer therapy — using a strain of bacteria found in the soil. Intriguing health news with intriguing possibilities.

Now, these aren’t the bacteria commonly used as natural supplements or found in yogurt. Those would be probiotics. Instead, these are “Clostridium sporogenes,” harmless bacteria that are widespread in the soil. This type of bacteria is expected to be tested in cancer patients in the coming years, as it seems to specifically target tumors.

The method goes like this: spores of the bacterium are injected into cancer patients, only growing inside solid tumors. An anti-cancer drug is injected separately into the patient in an inactive form, called a “pro-drug.” When that pro-drug reaches the tumor, the bacteria activate the drug, allowing it to destroy only the cancerous cells around it.
The researchers have been working on this idea for a long time. They have now created an improved form of Clostridium, which can now be produced in far greater quantities in the tumor than previous versions. And its ability to activate the drug is much stronger.

Any new cancer therapy must show an ability to target cancer cells while excluding healthy cells. This new bacteria-driven therapy does so. Clostridia are an ancient group of bacteria that evolved on the planet before it had an oxygen-rich atmosphere — so they thrive in low-oxygen conditions. When Clostridia spores are injected into a cancer patient, they will only grow in oxygen-depleted environments, which is the environment at the center of solid tumors. This is a totally natural phenomenon that could be exploited to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue untouched.

The research may ultimately lead to a simple and safe procedure for curing a wide range of tumors. It is believed that this therapy will kill all types of tumor cells. The treatment is considered superior to a surgical procedure, especially for patients at high risk or with difficult tumor locations.

The researchers say that the bacterial strain will be used in a clinical trial in 2013 and, if successful, could become a major new treatment in the battle against cancer. Stay tuned for future news on this exciting possibility.

This health e-letter addresses the recent craze for the use of antibacterial soaps in the war against germs. You see them everywhere. They can be found in friends’ and family members’ homes, in the library soap dispenser, in schools, and public washrooms.

What’s responsible for this recent fad? According to many commercials, you need antibacterial soap to kill all the bad bacteria that are out there waiting to cause disease. Ads promote antibacterial cleansers that kill 99.9% of bacteria.

This sounds great, except that not all bacteria are bad. And consider this health advice: repeated use of antibacterial agents can cause those bacteria that are harmful to become resistant.
This poses a problem when you think about how good bacteria and bad bacteria normally coexist in your body. Good bacteria actually compete with bad bacteria. This competition prevents bad bacteria from aggressively multiplying and causing illness. Your system is set up to maintain a kind of internal balance for you. If you kill off all the good bacteria, then the bad bacteria can multiply out of control.

So what to do? A new study from the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has found that hand washing with plain soap may be just as effective at killing bacteria as washing with antibacterial soap — without the added complication of killing off good bacteria.

The UK research team decided to investigate whether hand washing with soap is more effective at reducing contamination with bacteria associated with diarrhea than using water only.

For the study, 20 volunteers contaminated their hands deliberately by touching door handles and railings in public spaces. They were then randomly assigned to one of three groups: hand washing with water; hand washing with non- antibacterial soap; and no handwashing. Each volunteer underwent this procedure 24 times, yielding 480 samples overall.

The research team found that bacteria of potential fecal origin were found after no hand washing in 44% of samples. Hand washing with water alone reduced the presence of bacteria to 23%. Hand washing with plain soap and water reduced the presence of bacteria to a mere eight percent.

The researchers concluded that hand washing with non- antibacterial soap and water is more effective for the removal of bacteria of potential fecal origin from hands than hand washing with water alone and is effective for the prevention of transmission of diarrheal diseases.

If you would like to use some soap with a little more bacterial-killing clout than the regular kind, try using tea tree oil soap in the bathroom. It is naturally antiseptic and antifungal. Lavender and peppermint are also antibacterial. None of these alternative remedies should affect the balance of good bacteria in your body.

Now, researchers at Washington State University, Pullman, discovered exactly what compounds found in the bulb give it its protective nature.

Scientists had previously believed that garlic’s phenolic compounds were responsible for its bacteria-killing properties. However, using a combination of spectroscopy technologies, the team found that organosulfur is able to penetrate bacteria membranes.

“Our result demonstrated that the garlic-derived organosulfur compounds have the potential to be used as antimicrobial agents,” said co-author Xiaonan Lu.

In the trial, the researchers used the microbe campylobacter jejun because it’s a common cause of bacterial food poisoning, leading to abdominal cramps, fever, diarrhea and blood problems.
The American Academy of Family Physicians reports that garlic is a safe complementary and alternative medicine to help boost cardiovascular health, and has been shown in some studies to lower cholesterol levels and boost antiplatelet activity.

Garlic can be found fresh, dried or in natural nutritional supplements, so individuals have a number of ways to obtain the bulb’s healthy benefits.

Private pools and spas have become a normal part of life for many individuals, especially those living in the warmer states. Pool care, then, has also become an important topic for many homeowners, as finding natural pool and spa treatments has been a challenge for many consumers. Chlorine-based products have become staples in the pool and spa care industry, but the fact remains that the use of this chemical raises questions about its safety. Chlorine-free pool and spa care products have been developed relatively recently, but the question as to whether or not they are better for your family’s health is one that should be considered more thoroughly.

Chlorine is a chemical that, like other chemicals, can have adverse effects on the body if encountered frequently or in large quantities. For many pool and spa owners, both of these cases apply.
Chlorine has been found to irritate the skin, causing issues ranging from mild redness to rashes, such as eczema. This occurs because water that is treated with chlorine has been shown to annihilate the fatty acids and the vitamin E that are necessary for maintaining healthy skin. Additionally, chlorine-treated water can produce toxins that cause oxidation, also known as free radical damage. Free radicals have been indicated as triggers of premature aging, among other negative side effects.

Chlorine can have internal effects, as well. The body is host to many different forms of bacteria, some of them crucial to its proper functioning. Chlorine kills some bacterial species, including those that aid in the digestion of food in the intestines. Additionally, important bacteria has been indicated as manufacturers of vitamins, such as B12 and K, that your body needs.

Even more worrisome is the fact that chlorinated water has been shown to contain trihalomethanes, which are carcinogens that are stored in the fatty parts of the body. Among other adverse health effects incurred by chlorine are: asthma complications, increased amounts of some forms of cancer, and even heart defects.

To avoid causing these health problems in their families, many pool and spa owners have made the switch to chlorine-free products. Not only does this alleviate the previously listed issues, many of which can have fatal results, but it also improves the positivity of the swimming experience. Without excess levels of chlorine, swimmers will be able to enjoy their time in the pool or spa without smelling like chemicals, having their skin or hair become dry and brittle, incurring skin irritation and rashes, or having to replace their swimsuits due to accelerated decay at the hands of chemicals.

Making the decision to utilize chlorine-free products is easy from a health and convenience standpoint, as no one likes the stinging eyes and smell that are associated with chlorine, but from a financial aspect it may be a bit difficult. Products that contain chlorine are often much less expensive than their chlorine-free counterparts. Despite the disparity in price, many pool and spa owners have come to the conclusion that the benefits outweigh the extra cost.

A variety of chlorine-free pool and spa treatments have been released over the last few years. In determining which is the best, you must simply read the labels and do a bit of research on the ingredients. The best course of action is to choose the most natural yet effective products possible.

Implementing chlorine-free pool and spa products will improve the health of your family and enhance your swimming experience. With less chemicals, these treatments will allow you and your loved ones to enjoy your pool or spa without harsh side effects.

Largely unreported are many of the remarkable alternative methods for improving your health.

Here are some medical innovations that are making invaluable contributions to progress in fighting chronic disease.

Antineoplastons and Dr. Burzynski

In 1967, Dr. Stanislaw R. Burzynski, who was originally from Poland, discovered naturally occurring peptides (amino acids) that repair the DNA of cancer genes to turn off cancer. Burzynski came to the United States in 1970 and further developed these peptide fractions at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston as an assistant professor.
In 1977, Dr. Burzynski opened a clinic in Houston where he has been successfully using these peptides (which he calls antineoplastons) for patients in the final stages of cancer. Dr. Burzynski is the author of 175 scientific papers on antineoplastons and has treated patents from 38 different countries. Independent researchers have written about 250 papers concerning antineoplastons.

Since 1991, the Texas Medical Board in coordination with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been attempting to put Burzynski out of business with multiple frivolous lawsuits. His work is yet another story of how the NCI and the Food and Drug Administration can squash competing cancer therapies to protect the massive business of chemotherapy and radiation. Learn about this entire story and get information on his Texas clinic at www.burzynskimovie.com.

Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT)

Administering insulin via an infusion causes cancer cells to preferentially take up glucose. When anti-cancer medications (extremely low dose “chemotherapy”) are simultaneously infused, cancer cells get a much higher dose while normal cells may be spared much of the toxic side effects. A compound called DMSO, which has a high affinity for cancer cells, can bind to any fat-soluble medication to carry it into cancer cells.

IV Ozone therapies

This very intriguing intervention is still being suppressed in the United States despite its effectiveness. When ozone comes in contact with organic material, it breaks down into singlet oxygen and oxidizes or burns up waste products, pollution, microbes and weak (cancerous) cells. Normal body cells protect themselves from the oxidizing effects of singlet oxygen by naturally producing their own protective antioxidant coatings.

Many American cities and businesses, including Sea World, and most European cities purify their water by bubbling ozone through it. This effectively sanitizes the water, because it kills all the bacteria, viruses and harmful microscopic organisms. In Western Europe, more than 40 full-scale municipal ozone facilities are installed each year. France alone has more than 700 water treatment plants using ozone. Germany has more than 70 installations using ozone.

Ozone interacts with tissue and blood when mixed with pure oxygen at approximately at 1:20 ratio. In this way it does not disrupt blood constituents. Topical ozone is effectively used in high concentrations to disinfect or clean out wounds; low concentrations seem to promote healing and skin growth.

However, intravenous ozone therapy shows the most profound effectiveness on systemic diseases, including cancer. This therapy is certainly not something new. An estimated 7,000 physicians in Europe use medical ozone effectively, with no serious adverse effects reported. Reportedly, more than 5,000 German physicians use medical ozone routinely and have been using it as standard of care for more than 50 years. There are more than 6,000 scientific reports of its use in worldwide medical literature. Since 1976, however, our FDA has given its stamp of disapproval (via publication in the Federal Register), maintaining that ozone therapy employs “a toxic gas with no medical use.”

Most people trust that the medicines that they take will help them overcome illness, enhance their health and promote well-being. Unfortunately medications often deplete important nutrients from the body, and people don’t find the relief that they seek.

People who have become malnourished as a result of their medications are vulnerable to a host of nutrition related diseases. To make matters worse, they may find themselves having to treat malnourishment with a new batch of medications and this may become a dangerous cycle.

For instance, statins which are used to control cholesterol levels reduce CoEnzyme 10 and other important nutrients. Statins may also result in lower levels of A, D, K, folic acid and iron in the body. Cholesterol gets a bad rap, but it helps the body digest fats and nutrients and is important for regulating hormones.

Even common medications such as laxatives and antacids can deplete or block the uptake of essential nutrients. PPI antacids, for example interfere with Vitamin B-12. Furthermore blocking acid production for long periods of time using antacids may reduce the body’s ability to absorb minerals. Loss of B12 over time may result in anemia, as well as other conditions including fatigue. Blocked acid production by antacids can leave the body vulnerable
to infections and bone fractures as well.

The use of antibiotics has become a hot topic because the overuse of these medications has led to antibiotic resistant bacteria, and the loss of healthy bacteria. Antibiotics may also be harmful because they deplete the body of essential nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, Vitamins B, and iron.

Another group that decreases nutrients is pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. Aspirin and salicylates available over the counter for example, rob the body of folic acid and potassium. Other medicines commonly used for pain and swelling such as Cortisone, and Prednisone reduce levels of the nutrients calcium, magnesium, folic acid, vitamins D and C to name a few.

Diuretics such as Lasis and Endecrin deplete sodium, potassium, magnesium and Vitamins B1 and B6. Other medications that serve as a diuretic like Enduron deplete levels of Co-Q 10, and sodium and other important nutrients. Women who take hormone replacement drugs and birth control drugs are also at risk for malnutrition as they deplete levels magnesium, zinc and B2, B6, B12 and folic acid.

SSRI(selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors)drugs that are widely used are also associated with nutritional deficiencies. While a SSRI is commonly used to treat depression, they are also prescribed for some sorts of injuries, pain and are used on occasion to treat allergies. SSRI interferes with the absorption of B-12 as well as other nutrients like biotin and folic acid. SSRIs may also deplete Co-Q 10.

Before beginning a new medication consult with your doctor, or pharmacist to find out what your nutritional risks are. Here are just a few important nutrients commonly depleted by medications and some of the ways that can lead to new disease.

* Lack of proper levels of sodium may result in; nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, and muscle cramps

* Magnesium depletion may result in soft bones, fatigue, heart palpitations, convulsions and acne

* Zinc loss may disturb digestion and retard growth

* Iron is important in growth, vitality and a deficiency leads to anemia

* Vitamin A is essential in bone and tooth development and health. It is also important for the immune system.

* B1 is crucial for heart health, fights depression, constipation and fatigue. Provides protection for the heart

* B5 lack of this important vitamin may result in insomnia, abdominal pain, depression, rapid pulse, lowered blood pressure and disturbed electrolytes.

* B12 crucial for development and health of nervous system, lack of B12 may result in anemia.

* Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ 10)is crucial in all cellular functions, and is highly concentrated in heart tissue. A deficiency may lead to heart disease.
