There have been a few articles written about the multitude of environmentally sustainable industrial applications of hemp. There have been perhaps many more written about the medical applications of cannabis. Now there is a formerly skeptical California doctor who has found the optimal method of using marijuana for health.

Unfortunately, the DEA, an arm of the U.S. Justice Department, has made sure marijuana remains as a Class I drug under federal law. This classification means that a drug can be easily abused without acceptable safety even under medical supervision and basically has no medicinal merit.

The DEA declared this despite the fact that 926 medical research studies on non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids recorded in PubMed on September 22, 2011 were mostly positive with their pharmacological findings. And another government agency, The Department of Health and Human Services has a U.S. research patent on CBD from 2003.

This is an excellent governmental example of government bureaucracy double think: It’s a dangerous drug that’s useless as medicine
and we’re researching it as a medicine. The question is for whom? The Health and Human Services research is conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is currently researching CBD’s potential for curing cancer.

They are getting positive results also. In addition to eliminating pain and anxiety, CBD seems to make cancer cells die. Many already know this. But it appears that an arrangement is underway to synthesize and patent a CBD formula for big profits. Dr. Alan Frankel, MD explains the slight difference between the THC and CBD molecules in this three minute video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQc4iJedmfc).

The unusual new approach for healing with THC/CBD hemp

The current methods of taking in medical marijuana include: Smoking, vaporizing, ingesting edibles, and reducing THC hemp into a vial of concentrated hemp oil. They all have healing qualities, but the concentrated hemp oil that Rick Simpson discovered seems to have been the most efficacious form of medical marijuana, at least up to now (http://www.naturalnews.com/027756_cancer_cure_Big_Pharma.html).

Now it appears that Dr. William Courtney, MD, has discovered the best way to take in CBDs and other beneficial cannabinoids without the THC becoming psychoactive even though it’s still in the plant: Eating or juicing the whole raw marijuana plant.

Dr. Courtney explains that heating marijuana destroys enzymes and excites the THC’s psychoactive effects. But if ingested raw the CBD takes over, and dramatic healing activity occurs without the high.

Dr. Courtney met a very ill young lady who had moved into California to take advantage of that state’s medical marijuana freedom. After getting limited results from smoking or vaporizing pot and eating marijuana cooked edibles, she got involved with Dr. Courtney and was cured completely in a few weeks.

The method of cannabis ingestion she used mostly was juicing the whole plant. The leaves can be eaten as salad also. The branches are too fibrous for direct consumption or juicing. The young lady’s testimony and Dr. Courtney’s explanations can be viewed here (http://healthmaven.blogspot.com/2012/01/power-of-raw-cannabis.html).

The only obstacle is legality. The federal government is booting out state rights and harassing medical marijuana outlets and plant nurseries. Growing marijuana in sufficient quantity for juicing is impractical under current law (http://www.naturalnews.com/034502_medical_marijuana_states_Obama.html).

So Dr. Courtney is on a mission to obtain a United Nations consensus for cannabis as a vegetable. The raw plants eaten or juiced don’t get anyone high as CBDs overwhelm THCs.

Dr. Courtney considers the marijuana plant’s cannabinoid content so healthy eaten or juiced raw, that it would be the most disease preventing and curative food on the planet.

By now, everyone has heard about the astounding health benefits of green tea. Its potent curative powers are well established. Hundreds of studies prove that among many outstanding health benefits, green tea…

Fights “superbugs”

Boosts immunity

May help control weight

Has an antitumor effect

Wards off bacteria

Fights glaucoma

The medicinal benefits of green tea come from the compounds it contains, including antioxidants, vitamins C and A, L-theanine, and catechins.

But the most powerful substance in green tea may be Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

EGCG is unique to green tea and possesses such outstanding anti-cancer, anti-aging, and overall health benefits that it’s become a health marketing buzzword for tea companies.

EGCG is also the reason behind the single most powerful variety of green tea yet identified.

University of Colorado Study Confirms Its Concentrated Power

A green tea known as matcha—a finely milled, emerald green variety from Japan—has long been claimed to have greater health benefits than other green teas. Finally, a study from the University of Colorado validates these claims and explains them as being due to matcha’s exceptionally high concentration of EGCG. The study’s authors wrote:

Results indicate that the concentration of [EGCG] available from drinking matcha is 137 times greater than the amount of EGCG available from China Green Tips green tea, and at least 3 times higher than the largest literature value for other green teas.

The reason matcha provides such a concentrated dose of EGCG is that when you drink matcha, you are consuming the entire tea leaf.

Matcha is made from only the very youngest, greenest, and finest leaves at the tip of the tea plant. These leaves are then dried and pulverized using stone grinders until the powder is extremely fine (approximately 9 microns).

The Tea of Choice among Japan’s Royalty and Zen Buddhist Monks

Historically, brilliant green matcha has been valued almost as highly as if it were, quite literally, ground from emeralds. For centuries, matcha was reserved exclusively for Japan’s royalty and religious elite.

Matcha has the unique ability to sustain mental alertness, increase alpha wave generation in the brain, and calm the central nervous system—all at the same time. This makes matcha an ideal drink to facilitate meditation. For that reason, matcha has been used by Zen Buddhist monks for almost 1,000 years.

Matcha’s lofty lineage kept prices prohibitively expensive for the North American market until only recently. Thanks to improvements in manufacturing efficiency, the cost has dropped enough to make matcha affordable for most people.

Make Your Own Matcha

As noted, matcha is remarkably potent, and every person’s unique biochemistry will respond to it differently. In Japan, the average rate of consumption is 1-2 cups a day. Many prefer to drink a cup in the morning to prepare for the day, and a cup in the afternoon as a pick-me-up. Experts say there’s no level at which matcha becomes toxic or dangerous.

While it is possible for you to make your own matcha tea powder, it could prove to be labor intensive because you would need a considerable amount of hand-picked tea leaves and have to stone-grind them into a fine powder. It’s more convenient to purchase the matcha green powder from tea vendors and online retailers. Teavana carries premium, ceremonial grade matcha tea powder, which is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. Ceremonial grade matcha reportedly has a creamy, sweet taste compared to the food grade matcha, which has a bitter taste. To prepare a cup of matcha, simply combine 2 ounces of matcha green tea powder with 6 ounces of hot water, and stir until dissolved.

It appears that the ancient Greeks knew something about rosemary herbs that the rest of the world didn’t. Grecian scholars traditionally wore sprigs of rosemary when taking tests because they believed the herb would improve their performance.

Two recent studies prove that the Greeks’ use of rosemary didn’t just stem from a herbal folklore or superstition, but actually has scientific merit.

Both studies–one from the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing in Boca Raton, and the other from the Department of Nursing at Nambu University in Korea–found that rosemary benefits has a significant and measurable positive effect on test takers! That same benefit carries over to any high-stress situation that requires concentration, memory, and cognition.

These studies also corroborate the substantial research showing that inhaling essential oils such as rosemary reduces the anxiety in high-stress situations.

Research Confirms Rosemary Health Benefits

Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis) grows primarily on the Mediterranean seashore. Fittingly, its name means “dew of the sea.” It’s built quite a reputation as a potent, natural remedy for anxiety.

Throughout history, rosemary benefits over the years include:

• Improve circulation
• Strengthen memory
• Ease muscle pain
• Relieve headaches
• Improve digestion

Modern technology has allowed scientists to explore the mechanisms behind rosemary’s benefits. Evidence shows that rosemary boosts blood flow to the brain, and this improves memory and helps you think more clearly.

It appears that rosemary benefits also include breaking down acetylcholine, a chemical found in the brain. This allows nerve cells to communicate with one another more effectively. Which contributes to enhanced mental acuity, better memory recognition, increased concentration and a calmer disposition.

Much More Than Just a Pleasant Smell

The research done on rosemary deals with pure essential oils–not to be confused with “fragrance” oils. True essential oils confer benefits far beyond their pleasant aromas. The art of using these oils for health and wellness is called aromatherapy.

Cortisol is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. It is often referred to as “the stress hormone” because it’s secreted in higher levels whenever the body undergoes the “fight or flight” response to stress. High cortisol levels are associated with stress.

Simply inhaling the scent of rosemary, however, has been shown to lower cortisol levels and activate the “relaxation response”. This enables the body’s functions to return to normal after a stressful event, and elevates your mood.

Burning rosemary incense or a sprig of rosemary whenever you encounter “fight or flight” or stress can also help calm the nerves.

In addition to reducing stress and anxiety rosemary benefits have been shown to have positive effects against:

Respiratory infections

Stomach cramps

Asthma

Rheumatism

Cataracts

Gout

Depression

Fatigue

How to Use Rosemary for Medicinal Purposes

There are several different forms of rosemary available, including:

• Dried whole herb
• Dried, powdered extract (in capsules)
• Tinctures, teas, and extracts made from fresh or dried leaves
• Volatile essential oil (for external use only)

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, total daily intake of rosemary for adults should not exceed 4-6 grams of the dried herb.

Because there have been some instances of allergic reactions to rosemary, experts advise you to exercise caution when you begin using it. You might wish to start with a low dose, and gradually increase to the recommended dose according to your tolerance level.

High doses of rosemary can cause a miscarriage, so health practitioners recommend against rosemary supplements for pregnant and nursing women.

However, in any event, the herb is always safe to consume as a flavor enhancer in foods. You can add a teaspoon of finely chopped fresh rosemary to your soups, salads, stews or potato dishes.

Although some wellness guides and publications recommend recipes that call for adding rosemary to boiling water, herbs such as rosemary are actually more powerful when consumed raw.

Here’s how to make a raw rosemary tea:

Take about 2 to 4 tablespoons of fresh rosemary leaves/sprigs (or 2 teaspoons of dried rosemary). Steep in hot–not boiling–water in a covered vessel for 10 minutes or more.

Strain out the rosemary, and add a bit of stevia or other natural sweetener, if sweetness is desired.

Experts agree that before taking a rosemary supplement, you should make sure it will not interact with any medications (herbal or prescription) you may already be taking.

This same medicinal plant also protects against inflammation, stress, and even radiation poisoning.

In Asia, holy basil(Ocimum sanctum, O. tenuiflorum) has been cultivated for medicinal use for over 5,000 years.

Today, Western scientists have caught on to the herb’s natural anti-inflammatory properties. Chemically speaking, basil (in numerous tested varieties) contains compounds similar to those found in cannabis (also known as marijuana) and oregano.

This has led some doctors to suggest
basil as an alternative to medical marijuana, since it offers the same pain relief without the addictive “high”.

An Alternative to Medical Marijuana: Curbing Inflammation without the Side Effects

Although most people regard cannabis only as the recreational substance that has been the drug of choice since the 60s, medicinal use of marijuana dates back approximately 10,000 years to a prehistoric village that was discovered in Taiwan in 1972.

In 2008, experts published findings on an archaeological dig in Central Asia that has uncovered evidence of the use of cannabis by a prehistoric medicine man about 27,000 years ago.

Currently, tens of thousands of seriously ill Americans (especially those with cancer and AIDS) are now physician-certified users of medical marijuana because it provides effective pain relief, control of nausea and vomiting, and appetite stimulation … as well as an amazing number of other medicinal uses.

However, the use of medical marijuana does come with potentially permanent mental or neurological side effects, such as …

• Impaired attention
• Difficulty learning
• Decreased computing speed
• Changes to brain structure
• Decreased motor skills

Holy basil carries none of those risks as an alternative to medical marijuana. That’s because basil’s anti-inflammatory action comes from a compound called BCP, or (E)-beta-caryophyllene. BCP combats inflammation in a manner similar to cannabis, but without the side effects.

Basil is recommended by The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) as a first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder … bulimia … and hypoglycemia. According to UMMC, basil may even protect the body from harmful radiation exposure.

Basil’s aromatic extracts have also proven to eliminate swelling and pain from arthritis. In fact, research has demonstrated that basil works just as well as anti-inflammatory drugs.

The study—presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Manchester—showed that concentrated extracts of two types of basil taken orally reduced joint swelling by up to 73% in just 24 hours.

Power That’s Stood the Test of Time

In India, holy basil has been considered one of the most powerful herbs for nearly 3,000 years. It’s said to be sacred to the Hindu god Vishnu, and classified as a rasayana an herb that promotes long life and personal growth and health.

Holy basil is a mainstay of traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is used to treat ailments such as:

Diabetes

Respiratory disorders

Impotence

Allergies

Infertility

The Science behind Basil’s Curative Power

Basil’s efficacy against such a wide range of ailments is due not only to BCP, but also to the cinnamanic acid it contains. Cinnamanic acid is known to enhance circulation…stabilize blood sugar…and improve respiration. Most research on basil has focused on those 3 areas.

In animal studies and human clinical trials, basil has proved to be a powerful adaptogen with potent benefits that are:

• Antioxidant
• Neuroprotective
• Radio protective (prevents damage from ionizing radiation)
• Stress and anxiety reducing
• Antibacterial and antiviral
• Diuretic

Several studies have confirmed holy basil’s anti-inflammatory action. Its compounds inhibit the production of inflammatory prostaglandins—molecules that produce pain and fevers. By reducing prostaglandins, basil reduces pain and inflammation in the body.

How to Use Basil for Medicinal Purposes

One passionate advocate for basil’s medicinal benefits is Dr. Narendra Singh, a pioneer in modern scientific investigation of Ayurvedic and medicinal herbs of India.

Among other prestigious posts, Dr. Singh is the former Head of the Regional Ayurvedic Research Institute (Government of India, Department of Health).

Specifically, Dr. Singh focuses on the adaptogenic and anti-stress properties of medicinal herbs. With regard to basil, Dr. Singh recommends taking a single dose of 300mg to 600mg of dried leaves daily as preventative therapy and immune system support.

For curative therapy, he suggests taking 600mg to 1800mg in divided doses. Alternately, holy basil can be prepared as a tea (2 grams per cup). This brew is an excellent preventive remedy against common illnesses. It also works to treat many of the health issues described earlier.

Dr. Singh notes that the biological and neurological effects of taking holy basil, such as increased stamina and a heightened immunological defense, may take anywhere from 1 week to 1 month to develop.

However, once basil’s effects take hold, the improvements can last as long as 1 month even after discontinuation of the therapy.

Rose hips are the small, colorful bulbs that stay behind when a rose dies. They are roughly the same size as berries and vary in color from orange to red. Oftentimes overlooked because gardeners trim the dead flowers before the rose hips can form, rose hips are a great source of Vitamin C and can be harvested and prepared as a natural way to boost intake of this important vitamin.

With a sweet tartness, rose hips are part of the apple and crabapple families. Almost all roses create rose hips, as they are the natural product of a dead flower, but the ones that are said by many to be the best tasting are rugosa roses. In addition to tasting the best; these roses also produce the largest and most numerous hips.

Harvesting rose hips is very straightforward.
They should always be removed from the stem of the rose plant after the first frost, when they are the sweetest. At the time of harvest, hips should be firm with a little give in texture and bright red or orange in color. If any of the hips on the plant are shriveled or are not the right color, do not collect them; they will not go to waste, as they will provide a great treat for the birds, rabbits, squirrels, and deer in the area.

Preparing rose hips is also simple; however, make sure that they are prepared as quickly as possible after being harvested, as waiting to do so will compromise a lot of their nutritional value. Once they have been collected from the rose plant they can be used whole, but they have seeds inside of them that have a hairy surface and can cause irritation if eaten. If the rose hips are to be incorporated into anything other than a jam, it is recommended that the insides of the hips are removed before further preparations are conducted. To remove the seeds, trim the ends of the hips and then cut them in half using scissors (the hips will be too small to accurately trim and slice with a knife). Then remove seeds, rinse the hips in cold water, and drain them thoroughly.

After the rose hips have been drained, they should air dry to remove any additional exterior moisture. Once the rose hips are trimmed and ready for use, they can either be prepared fresh or dried. To dry them, lay them out evenly with a lot of space between them. Place them in a dark, dry, and warm location until they shrivel up, much like a raisin. Once dry, rose hips can be refrigerated or frozen.

Rose hips are great to use in jellies, sauces, soups, seasonings, or tea. If the recipe in use calls for them to be cooked, do not use aluminum pots, pans, or utensils, as it will deplete the vitamin C levels and alter the color of the rose hips.

Vitamin C is an important part of a balanced diet, and rose hips are a wonderful source of Vitamin C. Anyone looking for a natural, delicious, and easy to prepare source of this important vitamin will benefit from harvesting his/her own rose hips and from the beautiful roses that will grow in the process!

Many readers are likely familiar with the more common home remedies for curing acne… tea tree oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and burdock root. However, because acne is such a wide-spread and troubling problem, scientists are continuing to research new natural substances that are effective against this common issue. Both in vitro and human studies conducted over the last four years around the world have uncovered even more natural substances which are effective against acne.

Propionibacterium acnes is the bacteria most frequently linked to acne. This bacteria is almost always present on the skin of adults and adolescents. The bacteria feed off fatty acids found in sebum. If a follicle becomes blocked, the bacteria grow rapidly and secrete substances which break down the skin and form an acne lesion.
Therefore, much of the research on natural substances that treat acne have centered on finding substances that are effective against Propionibacterium acnes. Try the following five natural substances for a powerful anti-acne defense.

1. Licorice: Researchers at the Skin Research Institute in Korea conducted research published in July 2008 that explored the role of Chinese herbs as agents against acne. They discovered that Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) had anti-bacterial properties against P. acnes. Apply licorice root extract directly to blemishes and use licorice root tea as a facial wash.

2. Echinacea: Another in vitro study conducted at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada used a standardized preparation of Echinacea against P. acnes. This research was published in September 2009 and showed that Echinacea both killed the bacteria and helped reverse inflammation brought on by the bacteria. Consume Echinacea internally in the form of either organic tea or capsules and apply Echinacea extract directly to pimples as an “on the spot” treatment.

3. Resveratrol: Researchers at the University of Naples in Naples, Italy published research in April 2011 that showed that the administration of a resveratrol containing gel improved acne symptoms in patients previously afflicted. Resveratrol is a substance naturally produced by grapes and other plants. The researchers in this experiment applied resveratrol gel once a day to acne-prone skin.

4. Basil Oil: Researchers at Naresuan University in Thailand conducted an in vitro study on the effect various basil oil preparations have on P. acnes. They discovered that sweet basil oil and holy basil oil were shown to have significant anti-bacterial effects against P. acnes. In this study, the sweet basil oil had higher activity against P. acnes than the holy basil oil did, although they both were active against it. Dilute basil oil in a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) and apply to the skin to control acne.

5. Hops: Another study conducted in Washington D.C. and published in July 2007 showed that hops extract had significant activity against the most common acne-causing bacteria. Hops extract can be used externally as an astringent to cleanse the skin and to prevent acne outbreaks.

Acne is an embarrassing and annoying condition, but using one or more of the aforementioned lesser known home remedies for curing will get your skin looking clean and clear again.

Did you know… that a salt water flush does a superior (and inexpensive) job at detoxifying your colon than a colonic irrigation procedure?

Perhaps you’ve heard the saying: “Death begins in the colon.” Indeed, as toxic debris from inadequate and infrequent elimination gathers in the colon, it produces poisons that can slowly, but surely, cause disease and, consequently, death.

Experts say that approximately 85% of Americans suffer from poor digestion and incomplete elimination. To understand the effects, picture a piece of meat rotting away when it’s unrefrigerated. Lactobacilli turns the meat sour … the biochemical compounds produced by the bacteria as they grow causes the meat to smell bad … putrefying bacteria decomposes the animal proteins … and so on and so forth. It’s not a pretty sight –or smell.

Now, picture that putrefying food happening inside your body,
in the company of parasites of the intestine, colon, and organs.

When these parasites feed on body tissues, they produce wastes. Instead of your body obtaining the nutrients you need from the food, it allows those wastes to enter into the bloodstream, along with other byproducts of rotting, undigested food. The waste products then pass through the arterial wall and slowly overwhelm your system.

Eventually, these toxins block your body’s natural ability to flush out poisons that — over time — can kill you.

For all of these reasons, colon cleansing is an essential part of routine health maintenance. But professional colonic irrigation (also called colonics or colon hydrotherapy) are expensive and require a visit to a clinic.

For those seeking to detoxify your body naturally, an inexpensive, safe alternative (or supplement) to colonics, the saltwater flush accomplishes a very thorough inner cleanse you can do yourself at home. salt water flush

Saltwater flushes have none of the risks of customary colonics or enemas, and the cleansing effect reaches the entire digestive tract. In contrast, colonics and enemas reach only the colon or a small part of it.

Saltwater flushes are very safe and have no harmful side effects.

What is a Saltwater Flush?

Salt has long been used as a harmless preservative and disinfectant. The salt in the saltwater cleanse stimulates the body to repair itself in the same way as when you soak an external wound in saltwater or gargle saltwater for a sore throat.

Think of the saltwater flush as a bath for the inside of your body, where it draws toxins out from the entire digestive tract. When you imagine all of the waste products trapped in your digestive system — not unlike the slime and build-up that accumulates inside a garden hose or household pipes — it makes good sense that your insides benefit from a good washing.

An Amazingly Simple Procedure

Ingredients:

2 level teaspoons unrefined, non-iodized sea salt (not iodized table salt or Epsom salt)

1 quart (32 oz) purified water, lukewarm

Equipment:

Quart jar (glass)

Straw

Kettle for slightly warming water (do not microwave)

Instructions:

Put 2 teaspoons of salt into quart jar.

Pour in warm water and stir.

Drink the entire 32 oz of saltwater first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, as quickly as possible. Most people find it easier to drink with a straw.

After drinking the saltwater; lie on your right side for 30 minutes. This helps the saltwater reach the lower right hand side of the stomach, where the opening to the small intestine is located.

After 30 minutes, you are free to move about as you wish, though you’ll want to remain near the bathroom.

What to Expect During the Cleanse

Once in the small intestines, the saltwater stimulates contractions that propel the solution through your digestive system. Within an hour you should hear liquids gurgling in your abdomen, especially if you massage the area.

Everyone is unique, but most likely you’ll feel the urge to eliminate within an hour or two. Most people will have multiple eliminations, and intense diarrhea is not uncommon as the saltwater quickly cleanses the entire digestive tract.

Vomiting can also occur. In fact, at one time hospitals used a procedure similar to the saltwater flush to induce vomiting. If you struggle to keep the solution down the first time, take heart that this reaction can be overcome in time.

The flush process is intensified by gravity as it rapidly expels water from the body. As a result, it can be uncomfortable, but the process is swift and the discomfort should improve quickly after the cleanse.

Until you are certain that the flush is complete, take care not to pass gas except on the toilet — what you think is gas may actually be more liquid.

Tips on Practicing the Salt Water Flush

You might want to drink an herbal laxative tea the night before the flush to intensify and speed the cleansing process.

You might also speed the process slightly by crouching down and massaging your abdomen to help break up waste matter. Vigorous abdominal exercise may have a similar benefit.

The saltwater flush is a highly effective way to expel, detoxify your body naturally of toxins and waste. From this salt water flush you will have better digestion, increased energy, feel like a fresher you, and even weight loss.

High fever accompanied by chills, headache, shivering.

There are three main types of malaria, depending upon the parasites which cause it. They are tertian fever, quartan fever and malignant tertian malaria. The most common symptom of all types of malaria is high fever, which may occur every day, on alternate days, or every fourth day. The fever is accompanied by chills, headache, shivering, and pain in the limbs. The temperature comes down after some time with profuse sweating.

anemia, kidney failure, and dysentery

The main complications of malaria are anemia, kidney failure, and dysentery.

Malaria causes:

Malaria Symptoms, Causes, Remedy and Diet

Caused by a tiny parasite called Plasmodium

Malaria is caused by a tiny parasite called Plasmodium. The parasite grows in the liver of a person for a few days and then enters the bloodstream where it invades the red blood cells. The disease spreads from a sick person to a healthy one by the bite of an infected female anopheles mosquito. She draws a small quantity of blood containing the parasites when she bites a person who has malaria. These parasites then pass through several stages of development within the mosquito’s body, and finally find their way to its salivary glands. There they lie in wait for an opportunity to enter the bloodstream of the next person the mosquito bites. The malaria-carrying mosquito breeds in stagnant water.

Naturopathy says wrong feeding habits and a faulty style of living

According to naturopathy, however, the real causes of malaria are wrong feeding habits and a faulty style of living, which result in the system being clogged with accumulated systemic refuse and morbid matter. It is on this soil that the malaria germ breeds. The liberal intake of flesh foods, tinned and other denatured foods, and alcoholic beverages lowers the vitality of the system and paves the way for the development of malaria.

Home Remedies for Malaria

Malaria home remedies and natural cures, Questions and answers

Malaria treatment using Grapefruit

Grapefruit is one of the most effective home remedies for malaria. It should be taken daily. It contains a natural quinine-like substance which can be extracted from the fruit by boiling a quarter of a grapefruit and straining its pulp.

Malaria treatment using Fever Nut

The seeds of the fever nut plant are another effective remedy for malaria. They can be obtained from a herbal store and preserved in a phial for use when required. About six grams of these seeds should be given with a cup of water two hours before the expected onset of the paroxysm of fever, and a datura, second dose should be given one hour after the attack. The paroxysm can thus be avoided but even if it occurs, the same procedure should be resorted to on that day and it will cut short the fever.

Malaria treatment using Datura

The leaves of the datura plant are useful in the tertian type of malarial fever. About two and a half freshly-sprouted leaves of this plant should be made into a pill by rubbing them with jaggery and administered two hours before the onset of the paroxysm.

Malaria treatment using Cinnamon

Cinnamon is regarded as a valuable remedy in malaria. One teaspoon should be coarsely powdered and boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper powder and honey. This can be used beneficially as a medicine in malaria.

Malaria treatment using Chirayata

The herb chirayata, botanically known as Swertia andrographis paniculata, is also beneficial in the treatment of intermittent malarial fevers. It helps in lowering the temperature. An infusion of the herb, prepared by steeping 15 gm of chirayata in 250 ml of hot water with aromatics like cloves and cinnamon, should be given in doses of 15 to 30 ml.

Malaria treatment using Lime and Lemon

Lime and lemon are valuable in the quartan type of malarial fever. About three grams of lime should be dissolved in about 60 ml of water and the juice of one lemon added to it. This water should be taken before the onset of the fever.

Malaria treatment using Alum

Alum is also useful in malaria. It should be roasted over a hot plate and powdered. Half a teaspoon should be taken about four hours before the expected attack and half a teaspoon every two hours after it. This will give relief.

Malaria treatment using Holy Basil

The leaves of holy basil are considered beneficial in the prevention of malaria. An infusion of a few leaves can be taken daily for this purpose. The juice of about eleven grams of leaves of holy basil mixed with three grams of powder of black pepper can be taken beneficially in the cold stage of the malarial fever. This will check the severity of the disease.

Malaria diet

Malaria: Home Remedies suggested by users

Fast on orange juice and water for a few days

Diet is of utmost importance in the treatment of malaria. To begin with, the patient should fast on orange juice and water for a few days, depending on the severity of the fever.

Fresh-fruit diet

After the fever has subsided, the patient should be placed on an exclusive fresh-fruit diet for the first few days. Milk may then be added to the diet.

Well-balanced diet, emphasis on fresh fruits, and raw vegetables

Thereafter, the patient may gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of natural foods, with emphasis on fresh fruits, and raw vegetables.

Other Malaria treatments:

Warm-water enema

A warm-water enema should be administered daily during the juice and water fast to cleanse the bowels.

Cold pack application to the whole body

The best way to reduce temperature naturally during the course of the fever is by means of a cold pack, which can be applied to the whole body. This pack is made by wringing out a sheet or any other large square piece of linen material in cold water, wrapping it right round the body and legs of the patient (twice round would be best), and then covering it completely with a small blanket or similar warm material. This pack should be applied every three hours during the day while the temperature is high and kept on for an hour or so. Hot-water bottles may be kept on the feet and against the sides of the body.

Prevent mosquito bites, cleanliness of surrounding areas

Malaria can be prevented by protection against Malaria can be prevented by protection against mosquito bites, cleanliness of surrounding areas, and ensuring that there is no pool of SL.1.gnant water lying around. , and ensuring that there is no pool of stagnant water lying around.

While commercial products often offer extreme protection, they may cause irritation in some individuals. If sensitive skin is an issue or you just prefer a more natural approach, try a natural sunscreen recipe before you hit the beach next time.

Materials

Green tea leaves, which can be purchased at local natural health stores, are required for this natural sunscreen recipe. You also may use green tea bags, which can be found in your local supermarket. Sesame oil, beeswax, powdered benzoin and aloe vera gel are also needed. Sesame oil can be purchased from the grocery store, while beeswax, benzoin and aloe gel are found in natural health stores or ordered online. Additional required equipment includes a double boiler,
electric blender, rubber spatula and a 4-ounce wide-mouthed jar.

Preparation

Make a green tea infusion which will serve as the base for the natural sunscreen. According to a study published in Photochemistry and Photobiology in 1998, green tea contains polyphenols which protect the skin from dangerous UVB rays. To make a green tea infusion, pour half a cup of boiling water over 2 tablespoons of green tea leaves, cover and allow to steep for 30 minutes. If using green tea bags, tear one open and measure out 2 tablespoons of the leaves to use in the infusion. Strain the liquid from the plant material and set aside, discarding the spent leaves.

Place 1/3 cup sesame oil, one tbsp. chopped or grated beeswax and approximately 1/8 tsp. powdered benzoin in the top of a double boiler. Fill the bottom of the boiler about halfway with water. Place over medium-low heat until the beeswax is melted and the mixture is heated through. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Measure out 1/3 cup of the green tea infusion and discard the remainder. Pour into an electric blender container, and then add three tsp. aloe vera gel. Wait until the oil mixture has thickened and cooled to room temperature, and then add to the blender. Turn the blender onto high speed and process until it begins to sputter. Turn off the blender and stir the ingredients with a rubber spatula to remove from the sides of the container. Blend again, and continue until a smooth and creamy texture is achieved. Pour the natural sunscreen into a wide-mouthed jar, label with the contents and store in a cool, dry place.

Use

To use, cover your skin thoroughly with the sunscreen about 30 minutes before you’ll be exposed to the sun. Reapply frequently, especially after sweating or swimming. This natural sunscreen is not waterproof. Although the homemade version will not be as powerful as commercial sunscreen, it will offer a significant amount of protection without the use of irritating chemicals.

Toe nail fungus is a disease that many people have experienced and even more can’t get rid of for years. It’s very easy to get infected with and just as hard to cure. Even though the market is full of products claiming high efficiency and a very low recurrence rate, people suffering from this condition are constantly searching for methods that would be safer, faster and not as expensive. In fact, it’s not hard to find a good cure for nail fungus at a fair price.

Homemade solutions are becoming more popular every day while over-the-counter drugs and those sold with prescription are losing their status. Natural nail fungus remedies are more preferable because there are no collateral effects reported, and although many people are still not 100% sure whether they can trust such methods, it’s a fact that they are quite effective.

There is just one thing to remember: home remedies to cure nail fungus should be applied with special care and caution. The products used more often include Listerine mouthwash, bleach or even vinegar. These are easily accessible (especially considering the fact that you can find them at home) and comparatively safe.

But the choice is a lot wider than that: many other all-natural supplements and solutions can be purchased online. These have to be applied on a daily basis without skipping a dose or application. The most effective compounds are Sparox, oregano oil, a great variety of lotions, gels and creams. There is just one thing to be aware of: in most cases, toenail fungus is deep under the nail plate, which makes it impossible for home remedies and topical treatments to reach. For that reason some people trust oral medications, as they are a more secure way to have obvious results in toenail fungus treatment..

Tea tree oil is famous for its powerful antibacterial properties. This nail fungus natural remedy should be used daily to have proper effect. Among other popular toe nail fungus remedies there is apple cider vinegar that efficiently combats infection. It’s very easy to apply: you need to make a solution consisting of apple cider vinegar and water and use it as bath for feet during 20-25 minutes. Then it’s very important to dry your feet properly (it’s recommended to use… hair dryer for that purpose!). Here is another nail fungus natural preparation you can make at home: mix 3 drops of oregano oil with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. This mixture is quite effective if used regularly; in addition, it has a pleasant smell, which makes the whole procedure a bit nicer. Oregano oil, just like tea tree oil, has antifungal and antibacterial properties and can reach fungus even through the nail plate.

Unfortunately, you can’t ensure success by simply applying some products (whether those are natural home remedies for nail fungus or prescription medication); healthy life style is another thing to consider seriously. Some common sense personal hygiene tips include wearing comfortable shoes, putting on fresh cotton socks whenever you have a chance to change, avoid walking barefooted in public places and using personal items of other people. There are also several factors that might contribute to getting the disease, such as a weak immune system, diseases like HIV and AIDS, which make you vulnerable to infections of any kind, including fungus.

A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.

But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration have just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey.. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a ‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around so maybe it’s time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, ‘A banana a day keeps the doctor away!’

Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices known to mankind and honey’s popularity has continued throughout history. The two ingredients with unique healing abilities have a long history as a home remedy. Cinnamon’s essential oils and honey’s enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide qualify the two “anti-microbial” foods with the ability to help stop the growth of bacteria as well as fungi. Both are used not just as a beverage flavoring and medicine, but also as an embalming agent and are used as alternatives to traditional food preservatives due to their effective antimicrobial properties. People have claimed that the mixture
is a natural cure for many diseases and a formula for many health benefits:

1) HEART DISEASES: Apply honey and cinnamon powder on bread instead of using jam or butter and eat it regularly for breakfast.

2) ARTHRITIS: Apply a paste made of the two ingredients on the affected part of the body and massage slowly.

3) HAIR LOSS: Apply a paste of hot olive oil, a tablespoon of honey, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder before bath; leave it for 15 min and wash.

4) BLADDER INFECTIONS: Mix cinnamon powder and honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink.

5) TOOTHACHE: Apply a paste of cinnamon powder and honey and on the aching tooth.

6) CHOLESTEROL: Add honey to cinnamon powder mixed in boiled water or green tea and drink.

7) COLDS: Make a glass of lukewarm honey water mixed with cinnamon powder to help boost your immune system during the cold season. It may also help to clear your sinuses.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on a spoonful of honey taken before food relieves acidity.

9) LONGEVITY: Regularly take tea made with honey and a little cinnamon powder.

10) PIMPLES: Mix honey with cinnamon powder and apply paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash away the next morning.

11) OBESITY: To reduce weight, daily drink a mixture of a teaspoon of honey with half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder boiled in water with an empty stomach in the morning about half an hour before breakfast.

Cinnamon has an insulin boosting property (water soluble compounds called polyphenol type A polymers)which have the ability to boost insulin activity about 20 fold and can benefit people who have high sugar levels (obese people, pre-diabetics and diabetics ). Also, read the honey hibernation diet theory to find out how honey contributes to the metabolizing of undesirable cholesterol and fatty acid, provides a fuelling mechanism for the body, keep blood sugar levels balanced, and let our recovery hormones get on with burning body fat stores.

12) BAD BREATH: Gargle with honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water so that breath stays fresh throughout the day.

Honey plus cinnamon together besides being a amazing potential cure for so many illnesses, their total fragrant, sweet and warm taste is also a perfect match for the palate. The combination adds a magic effect to the taste of cakes, breads, biscuits and rolls and is known to make many winning recipes in the world of delicious food, such as the famous, easy-to-make, kids’ favorite classic – honey and cinnamon butter toast!

It is primarily used externally to treat skin problems, especially cuts, abrasions, wounds and burns. It prevents scarring and promotes healing. The gel can be drawn directly from the pulpy aloe vera plant leaves. Apply the fresh juice or gel directly to the affected area. It is safe and highly effective. It is also said to be good on insect bites. Cleopatra supposedly used it for cosmetic purposes.

Dosage: 1. Gel: can be applied as needed directly from plant leaves. 2. Juice: take 1 tsp. 3 times a day before meal.

Contraindication: Pregnancy, colitis, intestinal and uterine bleeding.

Side effects: High doses taken internally can cause intestinal inflammation.

When treating sunburn we need a large quantity of aloe gel. You can make up a batch of fresh aloe gel and keep it in the refrigerator (chilled aloe gel is doubly effective for soothing burns).
To make fresh aloe gel:

1) Slice off an outer leaf of an aloe plant, peel (peeler paring knife or with a vegetable), and place into a blender. Bough type of aloe plant – Vera or Barbados - is effective.

2) For every 50 g (1/4 cup) of aloe leaf, add
– 500 mg powdered vitamin C,
– 400 IU vitamin E (contents of 1-2 capsule),
– 1/2 teaspoon of lavender essential oil.

3) Blend thoroughly and apply several times a day to cuts, wounds, or burns.

4) Refrigerated in a clean glass jar, this gel will stay fresh for a couple of months.

Mixture of aloe and lavender gel soothes many kinds of skin irritations, from sunburns to skinned knees.

Homemade skincare remedies allow you to take control of the ingredients you use and put on your skin. Whether you have dry skin conditions–like psoriasis and eczema–or acne and oily skin conditions, the way you formulate your skincare remedies makes a difference. One vital ingredient in skincare is flax seed oil, a versatile carrier oil. Using flax seed oil in homemade skincare remedies proves to be quite easy.

Instructions

Things you’ll Need:

Flax seed oil (1 oz)

Lanette O wax (1 cup)

Stearic acid (1 cup)

Helichrysum hydrosol (1 cup)

Coconut oil (1/2 oz)

Banana botanical extract (1 tsp)

Tea Tree essential oil (4 drops)

Glass bowls (2)

Jars (2)

Whisk

Banana Face Balm

Combine 1/2 ounce of flax seed oil and 1 cup of helichrysum hydrosol in a glass bowl. Microwave the bowl on high for three minutes.

Remove the glass bowl, and mix 1/2 cup each of stearic acid and lanette O wax in another glass bowl. Microwave this bowl on high for three minutes, or until the wax is completely melted.

Beat the bowl containing the water and oil mixture vigorously as you slowly add the melted wax from the other bowl. This creates an emulsion. Beat the mixture for about five minutes, until a warm, thin cream forms.

Introduce the banana botanical extract and continue to beat the mixture until the powders thoroughly dissolve.

Jar the facial cream and cap it securely. The result is a fruity-smelling and beneficial cream for oily skin.

Tea Tree Salve

1. Add 1/2 ounce of flax seed oil and 1/2 ounce of coconut oil to a bowl containing 1 cup of distilled water. Microwave the bowl on high for three minutes.

2. Microwave a bowl containing 1/2 cup each of lanette O wax and stearic acid until the mixture melts into a liquid.

3. Create an emulsion by beating the bowl of water and oil vigorously as you drizzle the melted wax into it. Beat the mixture for about five minutes.

4. Introduce the essential oil of tea tree to the creamy mixture and beat it for another two minutes.

5. Pour the mixture into a jar and cap it. The result is a soothing and spicy-smelling salve that feels wonderful on dry or chapped skin.

We breathe every single minute of every day, and without breathing we cannot live.

Often people experience difficulty breathing fully, due to impaired sinuses. Also known as the paranasal sinuses, our sinuses are connected to our nasal cavities, and include the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. When we have a cold or allergies, the sinuses become inflamed, the sinus tissues swell and breathing becomes congested. Virtually everybody has experienced this. Additionally, accidents involving head trauma can occlude the sinuses, and cause long-lasting or even permanent obstruction.

For relief, many people turn to over-the-counter decongestant nasal sprays.

However, over-the-counter decongestants are not for everyone, and there can be some health risks involved with taking certain OTC drugs – especially nasal sprays and decongestants.

While injury-related sinus obstruction may require surgery to relieve, sinus congestion due to colds, flu, allergies or the consumption of some foods can be relieved by natural remedies.

Often, sinus irrigation with a light salt water solution is sufficient to clear up sinus congestion. This is where “neti pots” come in. These are small pots that look like miniature teapots. You usually find them at natural food stores. You simply fill the neti pot with warm salt water, stand over a sink, and pour the little pot of water up your nose. The experience isn’t that pleasant, but the results may be excellent.

Another way to go is to breathe the vapors of certain aromatic substances including menthol or eucalyptus. The Swiss company Olbas makes a couple of terrific products in this category. One, the Olbas inhaler, contains menthol, oils of peppermint, Cajeput and eucalyptol, one of the components of eucalyptus. You just apply the inhaler to your nose, take a nice breath, and the vapors open up the sinuses.

Another Olbas product, Olbas Oil, contains the same ingredients. If you are congested, fill a tub with hot water, drop 4 – 5 drops of Olbas oil in the bath, get in, and breathe the vapors.

You may also choose to use a eucalyptus-based supplement product. SinuCare by EuroPharma offers the small soft gelatin capsules that contain a particular extract of eucalyptus. You swallow a capsule, and over the course of half an hour or so your sinuses clear up. This product is especially good if you are trying to rid yourself of a more chronic sinus problem.

Yet another way to go is to suck on a eucalyptus-based cough drop. You will find that as you suck on them your sinuses open up. This is a quick, inexpensive way to go.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is plain peppermint tea. Peppermint contains menthol, and when you drink peppermint tea, the menthol in the tea wafts up into the sinuses and helps to decongest them. Peppermint is not as strong as eucalyptus, but it often works well.

Many people cannot tolerate dairy products, though they often don’t know it, and simply live with congested sinuses for years at a time. If you suffer chronic sinus congestion, you might want to try eliminating all milk, cheese, cream, etc for a time, to see if that makes a difference. If you find that your sinuses open up, then stay off the dairy and enjoy the breathing.

Environmental allergens including dust, yeast and molds can also contribute to sinus troubles. Inadequate air filtration in office buildings, unclean environments and “sick buildings” with mold may cause sinus troubles that don’t stop no matter what you try.

In such instances, you will need to take stronger action than drinking a cup of tea.

For most sinus troubles, nature offers simple relief, in the ways and types of products described above. Remember, we need to breathe, all day and all night. Keeping sinuses open and clear makes this twenty-four hour experience more enjoyable.

More than 45 million Americans not only get headaches, but they also get them time and time again. Some people are born with biology that makes them headache prone. Most of these are tension headaches, which account for 90%of all headaches. The pain is typically generalized all over the head, and you may feel a dull ache or a sense of tightness.

But an estimated 28 million people experience migraine headaches, which are even worse. Migraine is a complex disease that causes severe and often disabling pain, usually located on one side of the head, often accompanied by nausea, light and noise sensitivity, and other symptoms. Lots of things can set off a migraine attack, including changing hormone levels, poor eating or sleeping habits, dehydration, stress, weather or altitude changes, or more.

When you’re in pain, and ibuprofen just won’t cut it, try these natural pain relievers.

Headaches aren’t fun for anyone and are especially crippling for migraine sufferers. OTC medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen can help, but you have to be careful not to overuse them, which can lead to a rebound effect that makes symptoms worse. Here are the best home remedies to prevent headaches and help them get better faster.

Avoid MSG

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) may bring out all those subtle and spicy flavors in wonton soup, but if you’re one of the many people who are sensitive to this flavor enhancer, it might also bring on a whopping headache. Like other headache triggers, MSG launches its attack by dilating blood vessels and exciting nerves in the brain. If you get headaches and other symptoms from MSG, make sure it’s left out when you order Chinese food. Many packaged products are also loaded with it, so read labels carefully for additives with names such as hydrolyzed protein, glutamate, and caseinate, all MSG in disguise.

Skip Amines and Nitrates

A hot fudge sundae may sound heavenly, but it could also be a migraine sufferer’s nightmare. Chocolate, which contains an amine compound called phenylethylamine, can cause blood vessels to constrict, then dilate, which may trigger a headache. The worst of the amines may be tyramine, an amino acid found in aged cheese, pickled herring, and liver. Other amine-containing foods include homemade yeast breads, lima beans, and snow peas. Nitrates, compounds commonly found in processed meat products such as hot dogs, bacon, and salami, also dilate blood vessels and may lead to head pain.

Fish Oil

A small study at the University of Cincinnati found that taking fish-oil capsules reduced the frequency and severity of migraines, compared with taking a placebo. While preliminary, these findings add to the mounting evidence of benefits from the omega-3 fatty acids in fish. You could also eat the equivalent of 2 ounces of fatty fish daily to reap similar headache-reducing benefits as those in the study.

Warm Footbaths

This soothing, therapeutic bath of hot water and a few teaspoons of mustard powder (used in cooking; available at grocery stores) may help you herd away a headache. The hot water causes your body to redistribute blood from one concentrated area—your throbbing head—and get it flowing all over. At the same time, mustard powder’s essential oils stimulate the skin, diverting your attention from the headache.

Ginger

This fragrant herb inhibits a substance called thromboxane A2, which prevents the release of substances that make blood vessels dilate. In other words, it can help keep blood flowing on an even keel, which is essential in migraine headache prevention. Grate fresh ginger into juice, nosh on Japanese pickled ginger, use fresh or powdered ginger when you cook, or nibble on a piece or two of crystallized ginger candy daily.

Pencil

When you’re stressed or anxious, you subconsciously clench your jaw and teeth; this strains the muscle that connects your jaw to your temples and can trigger a tension headache. A solution: Put a pencil between your teeth but don’t bite. You automatically relax your jaw muscle to do this, which can prevent the pain.

Stand-up Straight

Poor posture creates muscle tension that puts pressure on the nerves that cause headaches. For people who work at computers, a posture problem called head forward posture can develop. Every inch that your head moves forward feels like an extra 10 pounds to the muscles in your upper back and neck, keeping them in constant contraction. Try this technique to correct head forward posture: Align your eyes on top of your shoulders. When you do this you will automatically straighten up.

Watch Caffeine Intake

If you drink too much caffeine on a daily basis—three or more cups of coffee or large amounts of soda—your caffeine intake can cause or worsen your headaches. Moreover, suddenly stopping your caffeine will surely bring on a headache. But if you’re not a regular caffeine consumer, one cup can go a long way toward providing headache relief by constricting the dilated blood vessels around your temples. It also increases the efficacy of pain medications, which is why it is found in most headache medicines.

Magnesium

Try relaxing magnesium (200 to 400 mg) to reduce the muscle tension and spasms that can cause your noggin to throb. But not any type will do. Make sure the supplement contains at least 200 mg of active elemental magnesium. Because magnesium is more preventive than curative, the treatment works best on, say, premenstrual headaches because you can predict when they’re coming and take a dose a day in advance. Those with kidney problems should consult a health care practitioner before taking magnesium.

Or this: A two-scoop cone of ice cream melting in the summer’s sun.

Do those images evoke desire or dread? Or both?

The truth is, it’s hard to enjoy a hearty dinner or a sweet treat when you’re worried about the discomfort or pain that may follow. There are a number of different problems that can affect the digestive system.

Three of the most common problems are heartburn/gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD; irritable bowel syndrome; and inflammatory bowel disease — all of which cause millions of Americans to suffer every day. However, by following a few simple rules, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate some of the symptoms that accompany one of life’s greatest joys – food.

Heartburn/GERD

Heartburn is a burning discomfort from the chest up to the throat that affects about one in every 10 Americans. One of the causes of heartburn is acid reflux, which is when stomach acid flows up through the lower esophageal sphincter and irritates the esophagus.

To prevent the burn, here are a few tips you can try:

1. Eat smaller portions of food

No matter what the food is, too much at once can put you in danger of a flare up. Also, try to eat food slower. Grabbing your meals on the go and wolfing them down leads to poor digestion and a greater risk of GERD symptoms.

2. Baking, broiling, grilling or roasting are all better alternatives than frying.

Also, make sure to cut off the fatty parts if you can. Foods that are high in fat sit in the stomach longer, which can cause discomfort.

3. In some cases, it’s best to just avoid certain foods altogether.

If you’re a frequent heartburn sufferer, spicy foods or foods that are highly acidic are probably not for you, especially on an empty stomach. Particularly acidic foods include tomatoes, citrus fruits and vinegar. If you’re really craving one of these foods, include a decent amount of other, less acidic foods like meat or vegetables as part of your meal.

4. Drinks can cause bloating and irritation too.

Stay away from caffeine and carbonation, as well as excess alcohol.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder characterized by abdominal pain, cramping and changes in bowel movements. Symptoms can range from mild to severe but are present for at least six months. They will often occur after meals, come and go, and be reduced or eliminated after a bowel movement. Sometimes, people with IBS will also suffer from diarrhea or constipation.

Normally, lifestyle changes are the most effective ways to cope with IBS. Here are a few of the more effective changes you can make:

1. As with heartburn, avoid large meals and eating too fast.

Foods that tend to aggravate IBS include wheat, rye, barley, beans, cabbage, some fruits, chocolate, alcohol, milk and caffeinated beverages.

2. Add more fiber to your diet.

Fiber helps regulate diarrhea and constipation. Soluble fiber, in particular, can be very effective. Foods high in soluble fiber include apples, beans and citrus fruits. Don’t try to cheat with fiber supplements – these can actually make symptoms worse.

3. Try to de-stress, in whatever way possible.

Anxiety has been linked with IBS. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night, and if possible, try to clear a little time in your day to relax and enjoy yourself. Some people claim that therapy can help with IBS symptoms.

4. Exercise.

Studies show that people who weigh less and are more physically fit report less abdominal pain than those who are heavier. Also, for a lot of people, exercise is a great way to reduce stress.

5. Are you lactose intolerant?

If milk and other dairy products bother you, you may have lactose intolerance. This means that your body is unable to digest the sugar in milk. If you suspect you are lactose intolerant, limit the amount of dairy products in your diet, and talk to your doctor.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the intestines. The intestinal walls swell and occasionally develop ulcers, which can lead to discomfort and serious digestive problems. There are different types of IBD, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, bloody stools and weight loss.

IBD is more serious than IBS and should be treated by a doctor. There is a high risk of complications, such as obstruction, abscesses or fistulas, which all may require surgery. Also, people who have had IBD for at least eight years have a greater likelihood of developing colon cancer.

Beyond any medications or treatments your doctor prescribes, here are at-home tips to alleviate symptoms of IBD:

1. Be aware of trigger foods.

IBD symptoms can be triggered by a wide range of foods including: alcohol, coffee, soda, spicy foods, beans, fatty foods, high-fiber foods, nuts and seeds, raw fruits and vegetables, red meat, and dairy products. Low-residue diets (which eliminate nuts, seeds, raw fruits, and raw vegetables) can alleviate pain associated with Crohn’s disease.

2. Eat a well-balanced diet with smaller meals distributed more frequently across the day.

People with IBD can have trouble absorbing nutrients from foods. Couple that with a poor appetite due to abdominal pain, and you may be at risk of malnutrition. Smaller, healthier meals help the body absorb more nutrients. You doctor may also suggest vitamin and mineral supplements. Make sure to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

3. Engage in light exercise.

Activities like yoga, tai chi, or walking are recommended for people suffering from IBD. These activities can aid digestion and reduce stress, which eases abdominal pain. More strenuous exercises, however, can jar the body and make symptoms worse.

4. Look out for other symptoms.

Not all symptoms of IBD occur inside the digestive tract. Consult your doctor if you experience mouth sores, arthritis or vision problems.

Remember, these tips aren’t “one size fits all.” It’s a good idea to keep a log of what you eat and when it upsets you. Eventually, you should see a pattern that will indicate which foods and drinks you should avoid. Also, make note whenever you find something that alleviates your symptoms. This could be your first line of defense against abdominal pain.

Food poisoning is an illness caused by eating foods that have harmful organisms in them. These harmful germs can include bacteria, parasites, and viruses. They are mostly found in raw meat, chicken, fish, and eggs, but they can spread to any type of food. They can also grow on food that is left out on counters or outdoors or is stored too long before you eat it. Sometimes food poisoning happens when people do not wash their hands before they touch food.

Most of the time, food poisoning is mild and goes away after a few days. All you can do is wait for your body to get rid of the germ that is causing the illness. But some types of food poisoning may be more serious, and you may need to see a doctor.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptom of food poisoning is usually diarrhea. You may also feel sick to your stomach, vomit, or have stomach cramps. How you feel when you have food poisoning mostly depends on how healthy you are and what germ is making you sick.

If you vomit or have diarrhea a lot, you can get dehydrated. Dehydration means that your body has lost too much fluid. Watch for signs of dehydration, which include having a dry mouth, feeling lightheaded, and passing only a little dark urine. Children and the elderly can get dehydrated very quickly and should be watched closely. Pregnant women should always call a doctor if they think they may have food poisoning.

How do harmful germs get into food?

Germs can get into food when:

Meat is processed. It is normal to find bacteria in the intestines of healthy animals that we use for food. Sometimes the bacteria get mixed up with the parts of those animals that we eat.

The food is watered or washed. If the water used to irrigate or wash fresh fruits and vegetables has germs from animal manure or human sewage in it, those germs can get on the fruits and vegetables.

The food is prepared. When someone who has germs on his or her hands touches the food, or if the food touches other food that has germs on it, the germs can spread. For example, if you use the same cutting board for chopping vegetables and preparing raw meat, germs from the raw meat can get on the vegetables.

How will you know if you have food poisoning?

Because most food poisoning is mild and goes away after a few days, most people do not go to the doctor. You can usually assume that you have food poisoning if other people who ate the same food also got sick.

If you think you have food poisoning, call your local health department to report it. This could help keep others from getting sick.

Call your doctor if you think you may have a serious illness. If your diarrhea or vomiting is very bad or if you do not start to get better after a few days, you may need to see your doctor.

If you do go to the doctor, he or she will ask you about your symptoms (diarrhea, feeling sick to your stomach, or throwing up), ask about your health in general, and do a physical exam. Your doctor will ask about where you have been eating and whether anyone who ate the same foods is also sick. Sometimes the doctor will take stool or blood samples and have them tested.

How is it treated?

In most cases, food poisoning goes away on its own in 2 to 3 days. All you need to do is rest and get plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Drink a cup of water or rehydration drink (such as Lytren, Pedialyte, or Rehydralyte) each time you have a large, loose stool. You can also use a sports drink, such as Gatorade. Soda and fruit juices have too much sugar and should not be used to rehydrate. Doctors recommend trying to eat normally as soon as possible. When you can eat without vomiting, try to eat the kind of foods you usually do. But try to stay away from foods that are high in fat or sugar.

Antibiotics are usually not used to treat food poisoning. Medicines that stop diarrhea (antidiarrheals) can be helpful, but they should not be given to infants or young children.

If you think you are severely dehydrated, you may need to go to the hospital. And in some severe cases, such as for botulism or E. coli infection, you may need medical care right away.

How can you prevent food poisoning?

You can prevent most cases of food poisoning with these simple steps:

Clean. Wash your hands often and always before you touch food. Keep your knives, cutting boards, and counters clean. You can wash them with hot, soapy water, or put items in the dishwasher and use a disinfectant on your counter. Wash fresh fruits and vegetables.

Separate. Keep germs from raw meat from getting on fruits, vegetables, and other foods. Put cooked meat on a clean platter, not back on the one that held the raw meat.

Cook. Make sure that meat, chicken, fish, and eggs are fully cooked.

Chill. Refrigerate leftovers right away. Don’t leave cut fruits and vegetables at room temperature for a long time.

When in doubt, throw it out. If you are not sure if a food is safe, don’t eat it.

Though a number of factors can be responsible, many doctors now believe diet is key. In a study of some 17,000 women conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, researchers were able to define a group of “fertility foods” able to improve conception odds.

Which dietary tenets were key to increasing fertility?

Eating more monounsaturated fats (like olive oil) and less trans fats (like the kind found in many baked goods or fast foods).

Increasing intake of vegetable protein (like soy), while reducing animal protein (like red meat).

Eating more high fiber, low-glycemic foods — like whole grains, vegetables, and some fruits, while reducing the intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars.

Consuming moderate amounts of high-fat dairy products — like ice cream, whole milk, and cheese.

Jorge Chavarro, MD, a researcher in the study, believes diet made a difference because the majority of women experiencing ovulatory dysfunction were also suffering from undiagnosed or subclinical PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), a condition related to insulin resistance that also affects ovulation.

“It responds well to diet, so that could be one of the reasons these foods were so helpful,” says Chavarro, who translated his medical study findings into a book called The Fertility Diet.

Pollack believes it’s worth giving the diet a try but says, “You should not depend on it alone — make it just one part of your overall efforts to conceive.”

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ that sits on the right side of our bodies just beneath the liver. Its primary function is to store and secrete bile. Bile is a yellow-brown fluid produced by the liver, which helps us digest fats. Our liver produces up to three cups of bile a day. Our gallbladder can store up to a cup of bile as it awaits a fatty meal.

When we eat, our gallbladder contracts and pushes bile into the small intestines where it helps with the digestion of fats. Bile is made up of water, cholesterol, fats, bile salts, proteins and bilirubin. Under certain conditions, substances in the bile, especially the cholesterol or bile pigment (bilirubin) can harden into gallstones. Gallstones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. We can develop one large stone or a multitude of smaller ones.

Many people with gallstones have no symptoms at all. Others go through life relatively symptom free, experiencing minor symptoms such as abdominal bloating, intolerance to fatty foods, belching, intestinal gas and indigestion. For others, however they may suffer what is called a gallstone “attack”. Gallstone attacks often follow a fatty meal. Symptoms of an attack include steady, sever pain in the upper abdomen that can last from 30 minutes to several hours. Sufferers may also experience pain in the back between the shoulder blades or under the right shoulder. A gallstone attack is often accompanied by nausea or vomiting. If symptoms such as sweating, chills, a fever or a yellowish color to the skin or whites of the eyes occur, it is important to seek medical assistance.

There are a number of factors that increase your risk of having gallstones. Those at a higher risk include women, especially women who are pregnant, on hormone therapy or taking birth control pills, people over 60 years of age, Native and Mexican Americans, overweight individuals and individuals who fast or go on crash diets and lose a lot of weight quickly.

It is important to recognize that if the gallbladder is loaded with stones, there is very little room to store bile and fat digestion may become impaired In turn, the unused bile can back up into the liver causing liver congestion. If this is the case, it is important to evaluate your liver’s health prior to cleansing on your gallbladder.

Recommendations for Wellness

The traditional treatment for gallstones is to have your gallbladder removed. There are, however, a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of producing gallstones or experiencing a gallstone attack.

Reduce your consumption of saturated fats typically found in red meat and pork, while increasing the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables you consume.

Start a diet and exercise program, but avoid crash dieting which can increase your risk of gallstones. Both diet and exercise can help you reduce your risk of producing gallstones.

If you are taking birth control pills or are on hormone replacement therapy, speak with your doctor regarding your risk of forming stones or have them check your gallbladder for the presence of gallstones regularly.
