One in 10 Chinese adults already have the disease and another 16 percent are on the verge of developing it, according to a new study. The finding nearly equals the U.S. rate of 11 percent and surpasses other Western nations, including Germany and Canada.
The survey results, published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, found much higher rates of diabetes than previous studies, largely due to more rigorous testing measures. With 92 million diabetics, China is now home to the most cases worldwide, overtaking India.

“As people eat more high-calorie and processed foods combined with less exercise, we see an increase of diabetes patients,” said Huang Jun, a cardiovascular professor at the Jiangsu People’s Hospital in Nanjing, capital of northern China’s Jiangsu province, who did not participate in the study.
“Whereas 20 years ago, people took naps during the work week, people are now faced with the stress of making more money to support a family and a buy a house.”
Previous studies over three decades have shown a gradual climb in China’s diabetes rates. The sharp rise in the latest study, conducted from 2007-2008, is largely explained by more rigorous testing methods, said lead author Dr. Wenying Yang from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing.
Earlier nationwide studies relied only on one blood sugar tolerance test, while this survey of nearly 50,000 people caught many more cases by checking levels again two hours later, an approach recommended by the World Health Organization. More than half of the people with diabetes didn’t know they had it, the study found.
The study did have some limitations, sampling more women and city residents—152 urban districts compared to 112 rural villages. Yang said she was alarmed by the findings, and China’s Ministry of Health has been alerted. She said there are plans to promote a national prevention strategy.
Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to regulate blood sugar. It is a major risk factor for heart disease, which remains the biggest killer in the world’s most populous nation.

New Gene Linked to Progressive Hearing Loss Identified
Thursday, March 18th, 2010LA JOLLA – Scientists from The Scripps Research Institute have discovered a gene responsible for progressive hearing loss.
The has team found a gene, called Loxhd1, which is necessary for maintaining proper functioning hair cells in the inner ear.
However, mutations in this gene can lead to degradation of the hair cells and a disruption of the process that enables hearing.
“It is thought that mutations in several hundred genes can lead to deafness,” said team leader
“However, for many forms of deafness, we don’t know what effects the genes have. In this new research, we have linked a previously uncharacterized gene to deafness, first in mice and then in humans,” said Mueller.
During the study, researchers used a technique called forward genetics in their quest to better understand the genetic basis of hearing and hearing loss.
In forward genetics, scientists make mutations at random in germ cells, screen the resulting models for physical characteristics of interest (in this case hearing impairment), then amplify these traits through the breeding of several generations.
The gene responsible for the trait is then identified through positional cloning.
In this case, the scientists were able to generate a new mouse line with hearing impairment that they called samba and then clone the gene responsible, Loxhd1, which had never before been associated with deficits in hearing.
When the mice inherited two copies of the mutated gene, they were profoundly deaf shortly after birth.
This is the third hearing-related gene that the Mueller lab has discovered.
“In humans, the prevailing difficulty is progressive hearing loss,” he said.
“As you age, you lose your hearing slowly. Since this mutation can lead to progressive hearing loss, it provides us with more information on the genetic underpinnings of this condition and gives us clues as to how it might be corrected,” he added.
The study appears in American Journal of Human Genetics, a publication of Cell Press.

The results hold promise for the design of a new drug class and for its potential use in combination with Viagra or beta blockers.
In heart failure, which affects about 5.7 million Americans, the heart gradually loses the ability to pump with enough force to supply the body with blood.
One reason for lost pumping strength is the mass death of heart muscle cells seen in many heart attacks. Fewer remaining muscle cells must then push around the same amount of blood, and hard working muscles grow.
Unlike the healthy bulging of an athlete’s bicep, abnormal muscle growth (pathogenic hypertrophy) in diseased hearts thickens chamber walls, slows the heartbeat and causes potentially fatal arrhythmias (erratic beats) and heart failure as well.
Recent efforts to reverse hypertrophy included a clinical trial, sponsored by Viagra manufacturer Pfizer, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), where they looked at whether Viagra (sildenafil) can treat moderate heart failure and reduce hypertrophy.
