9 Learnings from 9 Years of Brain Pickings

treeReflections on the rewards of seeking out what magnifies your spirit.

On October 23, 2006, Brain Pickings was born as an email to my seven colleagues at one of the four jobs I held while paying my way through college. Over the years that followed, the short weekly email became a tiny website updated every Friday, which became a tiny daily publication, which slowly grew, until this homegrown labor of love somehow ended up in the Library of Congress digital archive of “materials of historical importance” and Continue reading

Incorporating Cyber Security into the DNA of Telemedicine

cs2Mahatma Gandhi is often attributed to a quote advising citizens to “be the change you wish to see in the world.” This concept is also echoed in Smokey Bear’s 20th century Ad Council campaign that proclaimed “only YOU can prevent forest fires.” These memorable lines both imply that in order to secure our safety, and create lasting change, Continue reading

States Saying No to ‘Obamacare’ Could See Downside

For Gov. Rick Perry, saying “no” to the federal health care law could also mean turning away up to 1.3 million Texans, nearly half the uninsured people who could be newly eligible for coverage in his state.

Gov. Chris Christie not only would be saying “no” to President Barack Obama, but to as many as 245,000 uninsured New Jersey residents as well. Continue reading

The Right Way to Get your Chocolate Fix

One can always cringe when we read a news report on the health benefits of cocoa — the takeaway is almost always “eat more chocolate.”

Sure, go ahead and eat more chocolate — if you want to kill yourself.

But if you want the health benefits, you’ll need to stick to pure cocoa and get it the same way I do: so raw you have to steal it from a monkey.

What’s the difference? Glad you asked.

Chocolate is a candy loaded with sugar, soy, and an alphabet soup of chemicals — and if that’s not bad enough, the cocoa used to make it has been treated, Continue reading

Hysteria is No Longer Diagnosed

In the Victorian era, hysteria was a catch-all diagnosis for women in distress. The symptoms were vague (discontentment, weakness, outbursts of emotion, nerves) and the history sexist (Plato blamed the wanderings of an “unfruitful” uterus).

The treatment for hysteria? “Hysterical paroxysm,” also known as orgasm. Physicians would massage their patients’ genitals either manually or with a vibrator, a task they found tedious but surprisingly uncontroversial. More contentious was the practice of putting “hysterical” women on bed rest or demanding that they not work or socialize, a treatment that often worsened anxiety or depression.

According to a 2002 editorial in the journal Spinal Cord, the diagnosis of hysteria gradually petered out throughout the 20th century. By 1980, hysteria disappeared from the DSM in favor of newer diagnoses like conversion and dissociative disorders.

Phobias – Nyctophobia (Fear of the dark or of the night).

Nyctophobia – Fear of the dark or of the night.

Being scared of the dark is one of the most common childhood fears, one that many people carry with them into adulthood, but perhaps are afraid to admit to anyone?

Why would your fears continue into adulthood… you know there are really no monsters under your bed or hiding in your wardrobe – right? There are in fact a number of reasons why you may be afraid of the dark. Perhaps your parents were not very understanding or tolerant of your fears when you were a child? Maybe they just closed your bedroom door, turned the lights off and left you to cry in the dark, hiding under your sheets. So you lie there watching the shadows, your curtains move in the slightest of draughts and the house around you where you are supposed to feel safe, settles down for the night with all its creaks and strange noises. Your imagination runs wild and you end up even more scared than you were before the door closed. We all know that our imaginations are much more creative than reality – how many times have you been watching a scary movie and the camera angle changes so you cannot see what happens, but you can hear it and you imagine a scene more terrifying than the director could ever recreate on screen for you?

Often our fears our passed on from our parents – if Mum screams whenever there is a spider in the room – then naturally her children may well develop their own fear of spiders or something else. However irrational our fears may seem to observers the feelings of anxiety and panic that you may experience are very real. A full phobia such as Nyctophobia (fear of the dark or night) may have many causes and some people never really grow out of it. If you now have children of your own and want to help them sleep peacefully – there are many possible solutions without having to resort to shutting them in their rooms to just deal with it. Talking about their fears and providing reassurance, leaving a light on in the hallway, coloured light bulbs, glow in the dark stickers and there are so many different night lights and torches on the market these days. However you could end up spending a small fortune on batteries. You may have heard about creating a relaxing environment in which to fall asleep. One possible way of doing this is to create an amazing night sky on your very own bedroom ceiling – is there anything more relaxing than stargazing from the comfort and warmth of your very own bed!

Nyctophobia is a phobia characterized by an acute fear of the darkness. It is triggered by the mind’s disfigured perception of what would or could happen when in a dark environment (definition from Wikipedia).

Remember that you are not alone with your Nyctophobia!

Presenting – Claustrophobia

Presenting – Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is an anxiety disorder in which someone has an intense and irrational fear of confined or enclosed spaces. A person who suffers from claustrophobia may break into a panic when inside a lift (elevator), a bus, an aeroplane, a room with lots of people or any confined space.

What are the symptoms?

These symptoms may be relevant to many types of phobias (irrational fears):

— Sweating
— Accelerated heart rate
— Hyperventilation, or ‘over-breathing’
— Shaking
— Light-headedness
— Nausea
— Fainting
— Fear of actual harm or illness.

A person with claustrophobia may:

— When entering a room, start checking for where the exits are. Position himself/herself near the exits. Feel very uneasy when all the doors are shut.

— Avoid driving or entering a car during times of day when traffic is most likely to be congested.

— Opt for using the stairs rather than the lift (elevator). The reason being fear, rather than the extra exercise.

— Stand near the door at a crowded party – even if it is a large and spacious room.

— Panic when a door is closed and he/she is inside (more severe).
