The Nutritious Food That Can Transform Your Health

If you’re worried about how many carbohydrates you eat, you’re worried about the wrong part of your diet. Don’t think about food in terms of carbs, focus instead on eating raw, whole foods. Fruits and vegetables offer the promise of optimal wellness. Their nutrients can spell the difference between enjoying great health or succumbing to chronic disease.

Complex Carbohydrates

To understand complex carbohydrates, think of long chains of the sugar molecules found in nearly all plant foods. The words starch, cellulose and lignin all refer to these long, relatively stiff chains of 300 to more than 1,000 sugar molecules (or even more) that are made by nature. A large amount of research has been performed trying to understand the effects that complex carbohydrate food has Continue reading

A Relaxing Way to Fight Inflammation

Need an excuse to get a massage? A new health breakthrough in the area of natural health news has proven that this alternative therapy could reduce inflammation in the body. Since inflammation is implicated in a wide swath of chronic diseases, it seems that seeing a massage therapist might not be just about stress relief.

On a cellular level, massage lessens inflammation and promotes the growth of new mitochondria in skeletal muscle. Mitochondria are the energy center of every cell in the body. The research appears online in the journal “Science Translational Medicine.”

The study involved the analysis of muscle biopsies taken from the quadriceps of 11 young men who had exercised vigorously on a stationary bicycle. One of each participant’s legs was randomly chosen to be massaged. Biopsies were taken from both legs prior to the exercise, immediately after 10 minutes of massage treatment and after a 2.5-hour period of recovery. Continue reading

Why Obese Adults Should Eat Differently

The way one’s body looks isn’t the only issue at play for overweight adults. Far more important are the chronic diseases that overweight and obese people face. For that reason, an important piece of health news has identified the best way to eat: the disease-prevention diet filled with healing foods.

The study found that a diet rich in slowly digested carbohydrates, such as whole grains, legumes, and other high- fiber foods, significantly reduces inflammation associated with chronic disease. This is known as a “low-glycemic-load” diet, which does not cause blood glucose levels to spike. It also increases a hormone that helps regulate how you break down fat and sugar.

The controlled study involved 80 healthy adults, Continue reading

Genetic Variation Increases Risk of Metabolic Side Effects in Children on some Antipsychotics

Associated with increased blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels
