Need an excuse to get a massage? A new health breakthrough in the area of natural health news has proven that this alternative therapy could reduce inflammation in the body. Since inflammation is implicated in a wide swath of chronic diseases, it seems that seeing a massage therapist might not be just about stress relief.
On a cellular level, massage lessens inflammation and promotes the growth of new mitochondria in skeletal muscle. Mitochondria are the energy center of every cell in the body. The research appears online in the journal “Science Translational Medicine.”
The study involved the analysis of muscle biopsies taken from the quadriceps of 11 young men who had exercised vigorously on a stationary bicycle. One of each participant’s legs was randomly chosen to be massaged. The new study found that it improved skin hydration and elasticity in women.

Treating A Widespread Illness
The most often prescribed asthma medications range from short-acting beta agonists (such as albuterol) to inhaled corticosteroids (such as Asmanex and Qvar) to leukotriene modifiers (such as Singulair and Zyflo) to combination inhalers containing corticosteroids and long-acting beta agonists (such as Advair and Symbicort).
As is the case with most drugs, asthma medications come with attendant side effects. Some side effects brought about by asthma drugs are localized and appear in only one part of the body. These include reflex cough, bronchospasm, oral candidiasis or thrush, and dysphonia (hoarseness). Others are systemic and the effects are seen throughout the body. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is in the health news a lot these days — and for good reason. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection today. As a virus, HPV is also incredibly versatile, with over 100 different strains.
Of course, not all the variations of HPV infection are dangerous; some are fought off by your immune system before any harm is done. Other forms of the virus, on the other hand, could lead to cancers in the reproductive organs of both men and women, or the throat. As much as 75% of sexually active people are likely to get at least one genital HPV infection in their lifetime.
In particular, HPV can cause health problems for women. The development of cervical cancer is thought to be directly linked to the presence of HPV. Of course, it’s true that other factors are involved in the onset of cervical cancer — HPV likely doesn’t act completely on its own. GLA may be effective in treating the millions of people who suffer rheumatoid arthritis. It is caused by a faulty immune system and there is no cure for it. GLA could reduce symptoms. Some studies have found no real benefit, while others have discovered positive results. The latter includes these three studies:
- Forty patients received 540 milligrams a day of evening primrose oil (or olive oil). The GLA-rich oil led to improvement in morning stiffness with no side effects.
- Thirty-seven patients received 1.4 grams a day of borage oil (or cottonseed oil). Over six months, borage oil improved joint tenderness, swelling, and pain.
- Twenty-four patients took two grams a day of blackcurrant oil (or soybean oil) for six months. The GLA group had improved joint tenderness.

Kombucha tea is a little different from regular tea. It’s a special concoction made from tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. This drink is sometimes called kombucha mushroom tea. Kombucha isn’t actually a mushroom though — it’s a colony of bacteria and yeast. Kombucha tea is made by adding this colony of bacteria and yeast to sugar and tea, and allowing the mix to ferment. The tea contains vinegar, B vitamins and a host of other chemical compounds.
There have been many health benefits attributed to Kombucha tea, but little scientific evidence to back up these claims. It might be worthwhile, therefore, to take a look at the results of a new clinical trial that verifies at least one health benefit associated with the fermented drink: improved liver health.

Recent research suggests that a dietary supplement containing molasses extract may contribute to the battle against obesity. The study, conducted by Richard Weisinger, Ph.D., will be presented at the upcoming meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB), and may change the way people look at weight management.
Weisinger took two groups of mice and put both on a high fat diet. He supplemented each group’s diet with either 2 percent or 4 percent molasses extract. Twelve weeks later, the mice who were on the 4 percent extract diet had lower body weight and a decrease in a hormone produced by fat cells, all the while consuming similar amounts of fat as the other mice.
