A Triple Threat for Beating the Flu Season

Here’s some health news for those of you who seem to suffer every time the flu goes around: vitamin c, Echinacea, and zinc lozenges are the three best alternative therapies out there when it comes to beating the flu and the common cold. This latest bit of health advice comes courtesy of researchers at the Seekers Centre for Integrative Medicine in Ontario, Canada.

To see how well various alternative therapies have been holding up when it comes to preventing the flu and the common cold, the Canadian researchers scanned MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. They searched from January 1966 to September 2009, combining the key words/phrases “common cold” or “influenza” with the words “Echinacea,” “garlic,” “ginseng,” “probiotics,” “vitamin C,” and zinc. Clinical trials and prospective studies were included.

Not surprisingly, they found that vitamin C demonstrated the largest benefit for prevention when it came to fighting the flu and colds. Continue reading

The Power of Breath Comes from Breathing Correctly

Yoga, deep breathing and meditation continue to make strides in the healthcare industry.

More specifically, deep breathing is now widely recognized for its “profound impact on our physiology and our health,” says Mladen Golubic, a physician in the Cleveland Clinic`s Center for Integrative Medicine. Yet, the power of breath is still an unknown in our culture and within mainstream medicine.

Yogis understood the power of breath. In fact, postures (asana) were created to strengthen the body to sit for breathing (pranayama) and meditation. The breath is the most important aspect of the yoga tradition and one of the most important functions of the body in maintaining health.

The average American has 21,600 breaths every 24 hours (15 breaths per min X 60 min X 24 hours). The breathing process is the foundation of all brain function and 12 energy systems of the body. The respiratory system feeds our cardiovascular system and supports our digestive and lymphatic systems: two systems paramount to processing food and the removal of toxins and imbalances from the body. Breathing is also the only physiological function that can be controlled. Otherwise, it occurs involuntarily from the intelligence of the autonomic nervous system. Continue reading

New Series of Posts Presenting Phobias

In addition to our “Introducing” and “Home-Remedies”  series of posts, we now launch a new series called “Presenting – Phobia” series.     Each post will present another Phobia and discuss, manifestations, how-to-deal with people who have these phobias by explaining the Phobia itself, provide some suggested alternative herbs, supplements or nutritional support proven effective and other remedies with sources for more information.

We all have a Phobia or two lingering inside or for some, showing itself by dictating our behavior patterns.  Many Phobias are viewed as eccentricities or oddities of a personality, and many indeed are.  However some Phobias do prevent you from learning to your maximum ability, engaging in a meaningful relationship, or even going out for a cup of coffee with friends.  You may recognize some of your own traits, latent and apparent, in these many Phobias.

Knowing you have a Phobia does not mean you have to seek a cure.  Of course that depends on the Phobia itself.  For example one can live with Apiphobia through life, and as long as you are not around bees, you will never suffer a moment of any major consequence being Apiphobic.  On the other hand, if you are Bathmophobic (Fear of stairs or steep slopes) and live in San Franscisco, you need immediate help.
