Cancer Death Rates Continue to Decline

Deaths rates from cancer dropped 1.8 percent per year in men and 1.6 percent per year in women between 2004 and 2008, according to a new report — a promising trend that experts hope will accelerate in the years to come.

“This is really very exciting,” said report co-author Ahmedin Jemal of the Atlanta-based American Cancer Society. “Of course, the decrease is due to improvements in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.”

Over the past 18 years, the steady drop in cancer death rates has translated into more than a million deaths averted, according to the report. Continue reading

A Poisonous Mushroom That Could Kill Cancer

Healing foods can come from the strangest places. In this case, China, but that isn’t what makes it strange. No, instead it is the origin of the food cure itself — poisonous, wild mushrooms. Researchers have found that a compound from the mushroom seems to help kill cancer.

The compound is called “verticillin A.” What it does is sensitize cancer cells to “TRAIL,” which is a drug that causes cancer cells to self-destruct. In this way, the natural medicine world teams with the pharmaceutical world for a potent combination.

The mushroom ingredient keeps cancer cells from being able to resist the cancer drug. This targets a major problem for cancer treatment, which is drug resistance. Continue reading

Scavenger Cells Accomplices to Viruses

Mucosal epithelia are well-protected against pathogenic germs. However, individual viruses, such as the HI virus, still manage to enter the body via the mucous membrane somehow. Cell biologists from the University of Zurich have now identified a new infection mechanism, demonstrating that the viruses use the body’s own scavenger cells for the infection. The new findings are important for cancer-gene therapy and the development of anti-viral medication.

Mucosal epithelia do not have any receptors on the outer membrane for the absorption of viruses like hepatitis C, herpes, the adenovirus or polio, and are thus well-protected against pathogenic germs. However, certain viruses, such as the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, still manage to enter the body via the mucous membrane. Just how this infiltration occurs on a molecular level has been a mystery. Continue reading

Enzyme from Silk Moth Can Help your Heart Health

Silk moths dissolve their cocoons with a natural substance called serrapeptase. Scientists have found that humans can use this same enzyme to dissolve potential heart problems.

Plaque buildup and inflammation in the arteries are the main reasons people suffer from heart attacks and other dangerous cardiac events. This condition, atherosclerosis, occurs when fat, cholesterol, calcium and other deposits found in the blood clump together, block one or more arteries and interrupt your normal blood flow. These clots can occur anywhere in the body, including in the arteries in the heart, brain, arms, legs and pelvis, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Results of the National Health Interview Survey indicate that more than 26.8 million adults suffer from heart disease each year. It is the leading cause of death in the United States.

The main culprit in this epidemic is inflammation. This seemingly nonthreatening condition is the starting point for a wide range of ailments and health conditions. But the good news is that an all-natural substance, Continue reading

Mercury Is Too Dangerous to Be in Light Bulbs and Vaccines

According to the National Association of County Health Officials (NACHO), an independent affiliate of the National Association of Counties representing 1,300 local health departments, mercury poses the following dangers: “Mercury can be extremely toxic, especially to infants and children. Mercury occurs in three forms: the elemental form (also referred to as metallic), inorganic salt, and organic compounds called methyl mercury. Each form has characteristic pathways of exposure and unique health effects. Mercury affects the nervous system, causing brain, nerve, kidney, and lung damage. Though symptoms may be absent or non-specific, a fact that will hinder diagnosis, they frequently include skin rashes, particularly redness and peeling of the hands and feet in children; tremors; muscular weakness; inability to walk; convulsions; personality changes; memory loss; and in extreme cases, death. The developing fetus is the most sensitive to the effects of mercury, and so women of child-bearing age are the population of greatest concern. Children of women exposed to relatively high levels of methyl mercury during pregnancy Continue reading
