Addicted: America’s Opioid Crisis

Addicted: America’s Opioid Crisis

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • 1 child in 8 lives with a parent who suffers from a substance abuse disorder in America, and every 15 minutes, a baby in America is born suffering from opioid withdrawal
  • Prescription opioid use is a significant risk factor for subsequent heroin use; 1 in 3 people who misused opioids during their high school years ended up using heroin by age 35
  • One of the most prominent drug companies involved in the creation of this opioid addiction crisis is Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin. In October 2020, Purdue pleaded guilty to three federal criminal charges relating to its role in the opioid crisis
  • When it comes to children and teens, a major source of opioids are dentists, who wrote a staggering 18.1 million prescriptions for opioids in 2017. Opioids are frequently prescribed when extracting wisdom teeth, even though there’s no evidence to support this strategy. Children are also recklessly prescribed addictive opioids for minor surgical procedures
  • Opioids have a very high rate of addiction and have not been proven effective for long-term use. Research shows opioids do not control moderate to severe pain any better than over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen

Can Mouthwash Raise Your Blood Pressure?

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Antiseptic compounds in mouthwash may destroy beneficial oral bacteria that are important for maintaining blood pressure, thereby contributing to high blood pressure levels
  • The use of the mouthwash containing the antiseptic chlorhexidine twice daily was associated with a significant increase in systolic blood pressure after one week
  • In a separate study, those who used mouthwash twice a day or more were more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who used it less often or not at all
  • A “major shift” in the salivary microbiome was noted after chlorhexidine mouthwash usage, triggering more acidic conditions, which favor increased dental caries, and lower nitrite availability and oral nitrate-reducing bacteria, which affect heart health
  • For optimal oral and overall health, you need to cease killing microbes in your mouth, and a key way to do this is by not using antimicrobial mouthwashes

Scientist Attacked for Fluoridation Facts

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Christine Till, Ph.D., an associate professor at York University in Toronto, Canada, has published several damning studies showing fluoride damages the brain and lowers IQ
  • In 2019, Till received the President’s Emerging Research Leadership Award (PERLA) from York University for her research into the neurotoxicity of fluoride exposure
  • After giving a lecture at a recent conference that included speakers who question the safety of mercury and vaccines, a group of 14 scientists are calling for an independent review of Till’s work on fluoridation “to determine whether her ‘ideology is being misrepresented as science’”
  • For now, it doesn’t appear as though York University will comply with the call for an independent probe into Till’s research and public statements about water fluoridation
  • Depositions by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials in 2018 have also confirmed the agency does not have any safety data on fluoride intake and neurotoxic effects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also does not have any data showing fluoride intake is harmless to the brain. Meanwhile, more than 400 animal and human studies have found fluoride is neurotoxic and damages the brain

Study Shows Significant Link Between Mercury and Autism

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • A September 2020 meta-analysis concludes there is a significant relationship between autism and concentrations of lead and mercury in the body
  • According to the researchers, mercury concentration is a pathogenic cause for autism, meaning it’s a causative factor
  • According to a 2014 review, there is evidence of malfeasance and conflicts of interest in studies claiming that thimerosal in vaccines is safe
  • Serious flaws and errors also plague studies that claim aluminum in vaccines is safe. A mathematical error found in a key FDA study has reignited concerns about the safety of aluminum in vaccines
  • Glutathione is the dominant agent that binds to and helps move mercury and other heavy metals out of your tissues. Part of effective detox involves upregulating your biochemistry to facilitate the mobilization and elimination of metals

Annual Mercury Awareness Week Update

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • For the 10th year in a row, we now celebrate our annual Mercury Awareness and Mercury-Free Dentistry Week. During the week of August 23 through 29, 2020, we will match your donations to Consumers for Dental Choice, dollar for dollar up to $150,000
  • Spearheading the campaign in Europe, Consumers for Dental Choice led the coalition to win the banning of dental amalgam in children under 15 and pregnant or breastfeeding women across 27 countries in the European Union. The battle now upshifts to winning a full phase-out
  • Consumers for Dental Choice founded the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, a coalition of nonprofit groups from all over the world dedicated to banishing amalgam use. During the past year, eight more governments either banned amalgam now or set a final date for its use, notably the Philippines and Ireland
  • Realizing it is out of step with the world, and under unrelenting pressure from Consumers for Dental Choice, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reopened its abysmal 2009 amalgam rule
  • Fresh off winning protections for dental consumers in Maine, Consumers for Dental Choice launches an offensive in other states, filing petitions to enforce state laws in Wisconsin and Connecticut
