AHIMA, MGMA Call for Disclosure-Rule Revisions

Two influential associations of healthcare professionals are calling on HHS to revise a proposed rule that would expand patients’ rights to find out who has viewed their medical records.

The American Health Information Management Association and the Medical Group Management Association both assert that provisions of the proposed rule could create a significant burden on the providers that would have to assemble reports charting who had accessed patients’ records.

On May 31, HHS’ Office for Civil Rights issued the proposed rule, which modifies the privacy protections of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Continue reading
