Top Six Homeopathic Remedies for This Painful Symptom

A burning sensation while urinating is a frustrating and relatively common symptom. Sometimes there is a hidden cause, sometimes not. Here we look at the top six remedies from homeopathy, a member of the alternative health category. Read closely for a description that sounds up your alley.

1. Cantharis: When you are urinating, you feel a rather intense pain, is as if the urine stream is scalding you on the way out. Cantharis is the most common herbal remedy for acute painful urination. Along with the pain, you have strong urges to urinate frequently, which means you have many painful episodes in the bathroom every day. The burning urine often comes out in drops rather than in a stream, and may have some blood in it. The pain radiates into your bladder, and into the small of your back. It is relieved temporarily after you urinate.

2. Staphysagria: This is the best remedy if it’s bacterial infection and painful urination caused by sexual activity. (For women, this is far and away the main trigger for an infection.) This is most appropriate if you have a constant urge to urinate but often you just can’t — only a few drops will come out. The frustration is, obviously, high. When urinating, you feel pressure in the bladder area and a burning sensation.

3. Mercurius Vivus:
The burning pain is intense and the urge to urinate is strong. One symptom aspect that Mercurius would be effective for is that it is worse in the night time — and you might have chills and sweating. The burning sensation is more acute when you aren’t urinating.  Continue reading

Homeopathic Remedies: Natural Miracle Cures, “Faith-Based Medicine,” or Plain Old Scam?

Are alternative homeopathic treatments—which produce no provable results according to science, yet which are still recommended by some doctors—some combination of natural remedy and mind game?

“Ultimately, who gives a damn whether it’s scientifically proven if it works? … There are very valid questions about how it works, but whether it’s my mind or the product, it’s working and it’s working without side effects.”

That’s the argument for homeopathic remedies presented by Anthony Qaiyum, the co-owner of a large homeopathic pharmacy in Chicago, quoted in a recent Chicago Tribune story. He has a point. If you feel that some vitamin or herb is helping, then it’s helping. Then again, I’m sure that centuries ago, people genuinely felt that leeches helped ease their arthritis or chronic back pain.

For some doctors and scientists, the prospect of unproven, scientifically unfounded treatments is   borderline insulting. The Tribune sums up the sentiment of homeopathy critics here:

Few things rile scientific skeptics more than homeopathy, a baffling form of alternative medicine in which patients are given highly diluted  Continue reading

Alternative Medicine Relied On by More People

As consumers look to save money in a tough economy, many turn to alternative health care options. CBS 4 reports: “Health care costs are soaring. Thousands of people are without jobs and without the benefits afforded them. Now, those people are turning to preventative or alternative measures. … The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) shows 38 percent of adults and 12 percent of kids are now using alternative therapies to treat pain. In fact, Americans are now reportedly spending $34 billion a year on alternative therapies” (Demos, 10/26).

The Washington Post examines how people are relying on alternative medicine for flu prevention: “Mounting concern about swine flu and shortages of the vaccine recently approved to battle it are refocusing attention on homeopathic remedies, which are increasingly being used in this country and abroad as an alternative to prevent or treat various forms of flu: swine, bird and seasonal. …. Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration has mounted an aggressive campaign against products making unproven or unapproved claims to fight swine flu.” Despite a lack of evidence around homeopathic medicines, an increasing number of Americans are “using it to battle a panoply of ailments, including arthritis, herpes and flu.”

“A federally funded survey in 2007 found that in the previous year nearly 5 million Americans used homeopathic remedies, made from substances including duck liver, heavy metals such as arsenic, herbs and poison ivy, and diluted in water until they are virtually undetectable. … Unlike vaccines or prescription or over-the-counter drugs, homeopathic medicines, which account for annual U.S. sales of more than $200 million, do not need to demonstrate safety or effectiveness, although they must be labeled with a list of ingredients and the conditions for which they are being used” (Boodman, 10/27).
