Researchers at Rhode Island Hospital have discovered that obese people may suffer from serious mental depression due to their weight. The study they conducted, which can be found online in the journal Depression and Anxiety, finds that obese individuals who suffer from anxiety due only to their weight may experience it as severely as those with social anxiety disorder (SAD).

The current criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) on SAD states that a person with a medical condition can be diagnosed with SAD only if their anxiety is unrelated to their medical condition. Man Bags Can Cause Serious Back Injuries

LONDON – A team of medical experts has claimed that man bags, which have become the ultimate symbol of a modern metro sexual, are responsible for causing serious back injuries.

Man bags have come of age in the last decade, replacing the old-fashioned briefcase, with an increasing number of high profile men from David Beckham to Jude Law sporting them, reports the Telegraph.

Unlike a stiff attaché case, which has a carry handle, a man bag has a strap and is usually made of soft leather or canvas, allowing men to sling it across their backs.

UK’s favorite retailer, John Lewis, said sales of man bags have increased 21 per cent over the last year.

But the British Chiropractic Association estimated that the average weight of these bags now totals 6.2kg, or 13.7lb – the equivalent of nearly 14 bags of sugar – because of the quantity of electronic hardware that so many carry on a daily basis.

“Man Bags are now a necessity for many men during their daily lives, but they could cause back and shoulder pain from prolonged stress, this can also impact posture,” Tim Hutchful from the British Chiropractic Association said.

“The bags serve a purpose so we need to become more savvy in how we use them, whilst learning to read our bodies and know when we’re placing too much pressure on certain points,” he said.

Hutchful urged man bag owners to ensure they kept the straps short and to alternate which shoulder they slung it across. They also urged people to keep items in the bags to a minimum.

Gene Therapy May Soon Help Dieters Keep Off Weight Gain

NEW YORK –  Researchers from Columbia University have suggested a gene therapy that will allow dieters to eat less and burn calories at the same rate as they do when eating normally, thus helping them keep off weight gain.

During the study, the team genetically engineered a group of to limit the action of a gene called Cpe.

Their metabolism remained high despite being less hungry and not eating as much as normal mice.

They hope if a similar gene in humans could one day be targeted by drugs, it would allow dieters to keep burning calories at the same rate as they do when eating normally.

Lead researcher Leona Plum of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Centre at Columbia University’s Medical Centre have found a protein called Fox01 in the brain region of the mice, which controls a gene, Cpe, which is known to make mice susceptible to obesity.

The team genetically engineered mice lacking this protein.

“Interrupting the link between the protein and Cpe caused a different breakdown of neuropeptides – brain chemicals – in the hypothalamus, which made the mice less hungry,” New Scientist quoted Plum as saying.

The study showed that the experimental mice did not eat the full amount of food presented to them yet their energy expenditure remained at a normal level.

These mice also ended up 15 per cent lighter with 27 per cent less body fat.

And because their energy expenditure did not reduce along with their calorie intake, the weight stayed off.

While the specific mechanisms are still unknown, the research presents a possible new target for weight loss drugs.

“Many years down the road, gene therapy could be one thing that would work,” said Plum.

The study appears in the journal Nature Medicine.
